Trine is a beautiful fantasy action platformer with a fairytale-like atmosphere, following the journey of three heroes - a Wizard, a Knight and a Thief - in a quest to save the kingdom from evil. The gameplay is based on fully interactive physics - each character's different abilities and tactics can be used to invent new ways to battle an army of undead and overcome obstacles, and restore the balance of the world.

If you have ever wanted to mod Trine or develop your own epic platform adventure you can now do just that.

Whilst there is little supporting documentation at the moment, the Frozenbyte guys have given the full in house tools they used to make the games, here's what they say.

Frozenbyte wrote:The reason we’ve held off releasing the editor to the public before has been quite simple. It’s pretty difficult to use if you don’t know what you’re doing, and there’s *very* little documentation or tooltips.

The Frozenbyte Editor is a very diverse tool. This is what we use to make games like Trine and Trine 2, and it’s based entirely on our own technology. You can now edit existing maps, make new maps and do all kinds of things with it. If this sounds like fun, go a head and play with the features and experiment!

So did we make an easy-to-use version for everyone to enjoy? The answer to that is…not really :) Instead we’ve opened a wiki page and provided some very basic instructions on how to use our editor. It’s an open wiki after you’ve registered, so anyone can edit and post information, and we hope that people will start to share their knowledge with everyone. We’ll also be updating the wiki ourselves and tracking that all the instructions are correct and up-to-date.

So what are you waiting for follow these instructions and jump in.

Curious... will Trine 2 be distributed on Desura? If so, when? (not a specific date, rather, when in relation to broader release, a.k.a. Steam)

For Linux? If so, when? (again, relative date, but this time, relative to the windows release).

Thank you for the lovely, and immensely entertaining, original Trine! It feels & plays like a labor of love, and has so many nice small details that it does truly feel immersive, atmospheric, etc. Ari Pulkkinen's composition does contribute greatly to that detail and immersive nature. The final level does feel a bit like a labor of sadism, but that too is atmospheric ;-)

To that end (while discussing wild flights of fancy)... any update on the mythical, legendary, undocumentable, whispered-of-in-back-rooms, mod building kit for the Trine game engine? Joel, Lauri, any comment would be appreciate (esp. if it is "yes, we're bringing it all! everything you asked, it is coming, yes!") ...

This game is awesome! One of the best games I've played on linux!

Unfortunately, the current release has a very annoying bug: the progress is not saved.

The problem seems to be due to the fact that the directory "save" is created with the first letter capitalized ("Save").

To resolve the problem, just create the directory "save" manually:

mkdir -p ~/.frozenbyte/trine/profiles/default/save

No, I am afraid, you cannot. Frozenbyte said many times that Trine supports co-operative player in offline mode only (i.e. several players playing on one pc).

Trine was fun, one of the few newer games that I actually completed =P. I haven't tried the co-op splitscreen mode yet, but I will during my second playthrough. It's a really beautiful platform game where you will solve different types of puzzles with different character, who has different abilities. There's some bonuses along the way that I like, find hidden items for example, gives you another reason to replay. Good Game!
