Trine is a beautiful fantasy action platformer with a fairytale-like atmosphere, following the journey of three heroes - a Wizard, a Knight and a Thief - in a quest to save the kingdom from evil. The gameplay is based on fully interactive physics - each character's different abilities and tactics can be used to invent new ways to battle an army of undead and overcome obstacles, and restore the balance of the world.

If you have ever wanted to mod Trine or develop your own epic platform adventure you can now do just that.

Whilst there is little supporting documentation at the moment, the Frozenbyte guys have given the full in house tools they used to make the games, here's what they say.

Frozenbyte wrote:The reason we’ve held off releasing the editor to the public before has been quite simple. It’s pretty difficult to use if you don’t know what you’re doing, and there’s *very* little documentation or tooltips.

The Frozenbyte Editor is a very diverse tool. This is what we use to make games like Trine and Trine 2, and it’s based entirely on our own technology. You can now edit existing maps, make new maps and do all kinds of things with it. If this sounds like fun, go a head and play with the features and experiment!

So did we make an easy-to-use version for everyone to enjoy? The answer to that is…not really :) Instead we’ve opened a wiki page and provided some very basic instructions on how to use our editor. It’s an open wiki after you’ve registered, so anyone can edit and post information, and we hope that people will start to share their knowledge with everyone. We’ll also be updating the wiki ourselves and tracking that all the instructions are correct and up-to-date.

So what are you waiting for follow these instructions and jump in.

On the official site the price is 7.99 €. Why on Desura is 19,99 €?

Here is what I had to do to make the GNU/Linux version of Trine playable for me:

$ rm ~/desura/common/trine/lib32/libz.so.1 # or else the launcher might crash (libxml2 dependency)
$ mkdir -p ~/.frozenbyte/trine/profiles/default/save # or else *** YOUR GAME WILL NOT SAVE ***

[CTRL-G] in the game to ungrab the mouse, or else the mouse sensitivity might be way too high!

I have contacted Desura and they told me that they have fixed the "libz.so.1" issue. So do not forget to CREATE YOUR SAVE DIRECTORY and you should be OK.

There is a thread on the Trine forums talking about the saved game issue. It looks like it was believed to have been fixed. It'd be worth making a post there as well to make sure that the devs know that people are still having this problem.

Well,
one of the best games for Linux. Amazing gameplay with fancy graphics!
Also the soundtrack is well done and fits perfectly.

Now i am waiting for the DESURA-Release of Trine 2.

Trine was fun, one of the few newer games that I actually completed =P. I haven't tried the co-op splitscreen mode yet, but I will during my second playthrough. It's a really beautiful platform game where you will solve different types of puzzles with different character, who has different abilities. There's some bonuses along the way that I like, find hidden items for example, gives you another reason to replay. Good Game!
