Trine is a beautiful fantasy action platformer with a fairytale-like atmosphere, following the journey of three heroes - a Wizard, a Knight and a Thief - in a quest to save the kingdom from evil. The gameplay is based on fully interactive physics - each character's different abilities and tactics can be used to invent new ways to battle an army of undead and overcome obstacles, and restore the balance of the world.

If you have ever wanted to mod Trine or develop your own epic platform adventure you can now do just that.

Whilst there is little supporting documentation at the moment, the Frozenbyte guys have given the full in house tools they used to make the games, here's what they say.

Frozenbyte wrote:The reason we’ve held off releasing the editor to the public before has been quite simple. It’s pretty difficult to use if you don’t know what you’re doing, and there’s *very* little documentation or tooltips.

The Frozenbyte Editor is a very diverse tool. This is what we use to make games like Trine and Trine 2, and it’s based entirely on our own technology. You can now edit existing maps, make new maps and do all kinds of things with it. If this sounds like fun, go a head and play with the features and experiment!

So did we make an easy-to-use version for everyone to enjoy? The answer to that is…not really :) Instead we’ve opened a wiki page and provided some very basic instructions on how to use our editor. It’s an open wiki after you’ve registered, so anyone can edit and post information, and we hope that people will start to share their knowledge with everyone. We’ll also be updating the wiki ourselves and tracking that all the instructions are correct and up-to-date.

So what are you waiting for follow these instructions and jump in.

I was disappointed and surprised that the Linux version doesn't support multiplayer using KB&mouse, yet the Windows version does. Hopefully Trine 2 will do it. I would be totally fine with using xinput in terminal to setup the KB&mouse pairs, though a gui tool could easily simplify this.

Yeah I think we use Windows-specific libraries for that, RawMouse or something, which isn't available for Linux. Trine 2 uses SDL all the way I believe, and I think it works in Linux too (not 100% sure though).

"Hi guys, Joel from Frozenbyte here, developers of Trine 2. We're still in "stealth" mode regarding the Linux release - so that's why there's not a lot of official information available etc. We made the current beta available to our Humble Store customers so we can gather technical feedback (thanks btw). We will announce the beta officially this week, and final release will probably take a couple of weeks."

""Ah, yes we will release Trine 2 on Desura as well. We'll wait until the final release though, most likely, but in any case shouldn't take more than a few weeks I hope."

Today, from FB_JussiE, via a Linux thread onFrozenbyte's Trine 2 forum:

Trine 2 will come to Desura at some point, but we’d like to get some fixes to the issues reported here before that happens (hopefully wont take very long).

As for the keys I do not know how exactly those are handled, but of course we’d like (and will try) to get them to players who have already purchased the game via the Humble Store. There should be more details about how (or if its possible at all) this will be handled once we are closer to the release, but untill then I cannot promise anything.”

So, it looks like he *really* wants it to work exactly the way we'd like; that is, that Desura keys can begin appearing on Humble Store pages, including those who’ve purchased already.

If we're lucky, that will appear when it goes live here on Desura also.

Interesting, the way both he and Joel talk about it, it is as if the Humble Store is like a "get it now, beta for rabid Linux fans!" sort of release, and Desura is like the "real" Linux release where they want everything to be polished and most of the annoying bugs shaken out. This is pretty cool... way to take Desura seriously from a quality perspective!

Yeah this was the plan, however due to popular pressure we caved in and released it on Desura as-is, so we'll need to update it when we get the first proper Linux update out... luckily the game has been quite stable so not a whole lot of problems (mostly the fullscreen issue and then some individual things).

On the official site the price is 7.99 €. Why on Desura is 19,99 €?

Is there a way to add the key to desura if purchased from outside?

Price has been updated, sorry about that. If you've bought the game elsewhere it's best to email us and I can see some solutions - .

Trine was fun, one of the few newer games that I actually completed =P. I haven't tried the co-op splitscreen mode yet, but I will during my second playthrough. It's a really beautiful platform game where you will solve different types of puzzles with different character, who has different abilities. There's some bonuses along the way that I like, find hidden items for example, gives you another reason to replay. Good Game!
