Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS. Players can choose from 2 unique races, aliens and humans. Players on both teams are able to build working structures in-game like an RTS. These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning. The designated builders must ensure there are spawn structures or other players will not be able to rejoin the game after death. The overall objective behind Tremulous is to eliminate the opposing team. This is achieved by not only killing the opposing players but also removing their ability to respawn by destroying their spawn structures.

If you know Tremulous, you also know that the development team is working hard on the 1.2 release. Upcoming release won't add new models or graphics except a few minor changes to the old ones. Purpose of the new release is to address the major balance issues in the current 1.1 release. Those changes redefine the gameplay from the ground up thus creating a totally different game experience. There will also be some changes to eliminate known bugs.

The next release is complete code and balance wise. After four and an half years of work they were ready for a new release. However, the developers noticed a license issue in the current version. Most of the sound files come from an unknown origin ( Previously, they were wrongly released under the Creative Commons ShareAlike license). Now, they have replace all sounds of unknown origin with new ones. Unfortunately, the developer who created most of the sounds is now missing. There is a huge community effort to create new sounds. That process might take some time.

Here is some new content for the release after 1.2:

I'm not offended. I really don't mean to flame your mod, I'm just trying to say that maybe changing things up a bit would help so that people don't look at it as a NS ripoff. I am impressed by your modding ability, and I think NS style gameplayis wonderful. But everything looks the same besides the models. Even the maps.

(I don't see how the relative retail performance of Q2 and HL is relevant here, needless to say I think your claim that "Quake 2 failed" is rather detached from reality). The idea is not an "improvement" on Natural Selection because it is not based upon Natural Selection in the first place. If you actually bothered to play Tremulous before you compare it to NS perhaps you would realise that.

It's funny you mention Gooseman developing ideas for CS in the days of Quake (lets see... when you were 7) because I started programming Tremulous before NS was announced, starting in 2000. I'm not offended that another mod uses a similar concept to that of others, why are you?

Quake 2 failed because Halflife came out so shortly after. I don't like discouraging mods, especially this one because it looks like a great deal of effort was put into it. Its just the idea doesn't look so heavily improved. Just graphics and models. BTW, Gooseman had developed ideas for CS in the days of Q1.

So what you're saying is, once an idea is developed it should never ever be developed again? Why do people play Natural Selection then? Or Counterstrike even, which owes a great deal of inspiration to another Quake 2 mod, Action Quake.

I'm sorry, but I don't really see what you're getting at.

So this is a ripoff of a ripoff then? Not to discouirage you, but tons of people play NS so this would be much like making a Counterstrike ripoff. Whereas, people would more prefer playing the original.

I suggest you take a look at a mod called Gloom for Quake 2, which not only incorporates the game play features you list, but also predates Natural Selection by a number of years. If you accuse this of being a rip off, it is none moreso than Natural Selection is of Gloom.

I also suggest you obtain a copy of GDM Feb 2001, where Charlie Cleveland (author of NS) cites Gloom as inspiration:

Though your models are nice, it is an exact duplicate of Natural Selection.

1.Humans vs. Aliens
2.Building structures llike spawning
3.Aliens killing humans to evolve.
4.Objective is destroying all players=structures.
5.Even the map are quite similar right down to style and textures.

Nice try, but try being a little more creative.
