Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS. Players can choose from 2 unique races, aliens and humans. Players on both teams are able to build working structures in-game like an RTS. These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning. The designated builders must ensure there are spawn structures or other players will not be able to rejoin the game after death. The overall objective behind Tremulous is to eliminate the opposing team. This is achieved by not only killing the opposing players but also removing their ability to respawn by destroying their spawn structures.

We are holding a winter mini-tournament!

With the dates being tentative, we will be holding a tournament from Sunday, December 8th to Sunday, December 22nd. We have chosen these dates so that the tournament will end right before the holiday season and/or finals. The summer tournament was a surprising success given the youth of our game, and we look forward to holding at least two tournaments a year. Ideally, one large one in the summer and one smaller one in the winter.

What is the format?

Unlike the summer tournament, this will be a pick-up tournament. This means that after everyone has registered, team captains will be chosen from those that are participating as players. In a set order, the team captains will choose from those that have signed up for the tournament. Each team will face each other once, and there will not be a final round. Instead, the winners will be determined based off a point system, using the same format as the summer tournament.

Who can participate?

Anyone, of any skill level. It doesn't matter if you're in a clan or not, as clans won't be participating as whole groups. Those that desire to represent their clan can wear the clan tags along with the team colors. We welcome anyone, including those new to our game. Just make sure you can show up.

When are the matches?

On Sundays at the same times as our weekly development games. The tournament matches will be replacing the scheduled games. We will be holding three tournament match days, on December 8th, 15th, and 22nd. If you show up to development games to begin with, you might as well register yourself as a player.

Which gameplay will be used?

The current Unvanquished gameplay. We have diverged significantly since the last tournament, and it would be best to play a few matches against bots to familiarize yourself. Of course, it mainly relates to team construction and expansion, so if you're good at shooting or biting things, it probably won't be too different for you.

Where can I sign up?

Here, in this thread. Make sure to share this post with your friends! It will be a lot of fun, and it will give us even more valuable feedback on our developing gameplay design.

See you there!

Having played both the Tremulous public beta extensively and Natural Selection for a week or so, I can say that they are different. The only reason for the maps looking the same (which I dont agree with at all) is that they share some of the same textures. And what do you mean by style? futuristic?

Personally, I think you should play the game before making judgments like that. The basic gameplay elements are similar, I agree, but to say that Tremulous will fail because Natural Selection is similar and has more players is just wrong.

Did games fail when they added deathmatch online play when quake1 was so popular? Were they called rip-offs?

Why did Natural Selection get so popular? They 'ripped-off' Gloom. Your list of similarities match that of Gloom, maybe not the maps, but again I'm really not seeing the maps as being the same anyways...

I'm not offended. I really don't mean to flame your mod, I'm just trying to say that maybe changing things up a bit would help so that people don't look at it as a NS ripoff. I am impressed by your modding ability, and I think NS style gameplayis wonderful. But everything looks the same besides the models. Even the maps.

(I don't see how the relative retail performance of Q2 and HL is relevant here, needless to say I think your claim that "Quake 2 failed" is rather detached from reality). The idea is not an "improvement" on Natural Selection because it is not based upon Natural Selection in the first place. If you actually bothered to play Tremulous before you compare it to NS perhaps you would realise that.

It's funny you mention Gooseman developing ideas for CS in the days of Quake (lets see... when you were 7) because I started programming Tremulous before NS was announced, starting in 2000. I'm not offended that another mod uses a similar concept to that of others, why are you?

Quake 2 failed because Halflife came out so shortly after. I don't like discouraging mods, especially this one because it looks like a great deal of effort was put into it. Its just the idea doesn't look so heavily improved. Just graphics and models. BTW, Gooseman had developed ideas for CS in the days of Q1.

So what you're saying is, once an idea is developed it should never ever be developed again? Why do people play Natural Selection then? Or Counterstrike even, which owes a great deal of inspiration to another Quake 2 mod, Action Quake.

I'm sorry, but I don't really see what you're getting at.

So this is a ripoff of a ripoff then? Not to discouirage you, but tons of people play NS so this would be much like making a Counterstrike ripoff. Whereas, people would more prefer playing the original.

I suggest you take a look at a mod called Gloom for Quake 2, which not only incorporates the game play features you list, but also predates Natural Selection by a number of years. If you accuse this of being a rip off, it is none moreso than Natural Selection is of Gloom.

I also suggest you obtain a copy of GDM Feb 2001, where Charlie Cleveland (author of NS) cites Gloom as inspiration:

Though your models are nice, it is an exact duplicate of Natural Selection.

1.Humans vs. Aliens
2.Building structures llike spawning
3.Aliens killing humans to evolve.
4.Objective is destroying all players=structures.
5.Even the map are quite similar right down to style and textures.

Nice try, but try being a little more creative.

Pretty fun game! Only downside I see is that vanilla tremulous doesn't get updated. You have to manually search for patches and mods scattered around forums. Community is very nice and helpfull though :)

Just a Natural Selection Clone, since NS came out way before this, back when NS was just a mod for Half Life. Now they are making Natural Selection 2 a stand alone game! Be sure to check that one out! Much better than this!
