Chapter One: Overlord

Traction Wars is a Free to Play, standalone WWII Realism Game utilising the CRYENGINE. It will offer a gaming experience that highlights realistic and historically accurate environments leading you through the battlefields of WWII. The first release "Overlord", will feature the early stages of the Normandy Campaign between the British and German Armies. From the infamous D-Day invasions through to the capture of Caen in the Summer of 1944, players will take part in some of the most fierce and bloody battles in history. Traction Wars will be released in a series of chapters, each expanding upon the previous. Chapter One: OVERLORD, is currently in development.

As we revealed last month, the operation we have based Traction Wars is one of the most pivotal events in the D-Day Landings, the capture of Pegasus Bridge. This week we want to begin to explore how we have taken the events of that night into the game.

As you would expect, the game centres on Pegasus Bridge itself. Whichever team can effectively take and then hold this iconic bridge will dictate the outcome of the game. This natural chokepoint funnels and focuses the flow of PvP combat – the river is deep and wide making the bridge the only route across the Caen Canal. To avoid some element of frustration, the Level Designers have carefully added obstacles for cover in order to provide some form of balance between the two sides.

Meanwhile, the Artists have modelled the bridge to its exact specification – this allows the players to take advantage of the two flanks on the bridge and to climb the stairs to the engine room for an elevated vantage point. In the distance you can see the Café Gondree, which is still open today. Beyond the café the countryside opens out providing interesting and varied opportunities for flanking and larger tactical manoeuvres further inland, as the British 6th Airborne advance to capture Bénouville town.


Looking South-East, we can see the terrain is open with some cover in the form of craters, ditches and elevation changes along the boundary lines. The dense vegetation will make a prone soldier a difficult target to spot, and make for some nerve wrecking manoeuvres in the dark of the night. For those of you with eagle eyes, you can just see the gliders the British arrived in too.


This final shot from the editor shows the German perspective of the iconic bridge area with the German entrenchments on the British side in the distance. The café and wall provide some hard cover for the defenders from both across the bridge and the surrounding countryside, as well as being a good target to take control over due to its strategic position.


If Pegasus Bridge is captured, the 6th Airborne and 7th Paras must defend the bridges from counterattacks throughout the night and early hours of the morning until relief arrives from Lord Lovat's Commandos at Sword Beach. So rest assured, there will be another iteration which further expands to the events which took place on 6th June!

Greetings devs!

-Do you have a release date for the 1st Chapter?
-Will you introduce different setting/s?
-I really hope the game will be on par with RO2/RS in terms of realism, you can really immerse yourself in those games just because of the fact that you always need to be on your toes cause a bullet with your name is in anyones gun.
-I can't wait to try this game, I'm fed up with arcadish and comic shooters that are in the FPS market now.
-Keep up the good work, Cheers!!!

Well, I'm not a developer, But I can echo what they have always been saying about the release date. They say: When It's Ready. Personally I find realism is good, In moderation. If it's just overpowered like you catch a bullet if you turn a corner and instantly get killed. Otherwise it's just plain frustrating and no fun. I find RO2 is bordering on that, But it isn't completely frustrating.

The turning the corner and always meeting a bullet happens because it's easier to shoot a gun in those games than it is in reality. That's a big issue with FPS games attempting to be realistic. No need for fire superiority when all that matters is who swings their perfectly precise gun onto the target first.

Thanks for the reply! I'm coming from HnG and altough that game is fun, it's downright arcadish and I've kinda stopped playing it and found TW quite recently on HnG forum where a lot of people were buzzing about it. I took a look and since I don't have fast internet I could just read these posts and open a few images, I can say that I'm impressed with the amount of detail the weapons have, it trully is staggering. Regarding the realism part of your post I agree that Ro2/RS isn't your typical shooter, and the more you play the more you get familiar with the maps and the overall gameplay, you pick up a few tricks and get a lot more cautious.

I miss WW2 shooters its all modern do it all for you perks and gadgets crap with all full auto or fast semi auto weapons and reflex sights etc, best of luck to you guys.

game is broken servers not working because of pinkbuster
game has so many stupid things that don't even need you .
And game for me is arcade .

RO2 never involved real teamwork and tactics, really big open maps, lots of vehicles and vareity in theatres of war.

Thats what I'm hope to get from TW
RO2 for me is just slowed down CoD

Your he bit harsh whit the game, when i play i usualy see he lot of coordination betwen squad leader and commander (Along with those squad leader who alway rally they men on them)

Problem is that its very buggy, my game get stuck on the mainscreen or when entering a platoon, so it´s really a broken game. Darkest hour mod is the best that is around now in ww2 fps.
