Post feature Report RSS Creating Mood Through Music

One of the most important aspects of The Thread is the atmosphere. Game mechanics , art, music and every other aspect of the game need to work together to convey a certain je ne sais quoi to the player. The feeling of dread, despair, tension, or hope, depending on the situation.

Beyond the Cusp is more of a demo track than anything else. It helps us set the mood as the team develops the game. It's an amalgamation of concepts distilled through a few specific sources of inspiration (which you can probably pick out easily).

Ultimately, the track may or may not even end up in the final game, but it helps set the tone, along with the concept art for what the final look, and more importantly, the feel of the game will be.

After a failed attempt at a good mood piece, I spent the better part of an evening some weeks ago working on this track. I am by no means a composer, in fact, I'm the lead programmer on the game, but I do dabble into music on occasion.

The track was created entirely in FL Studio 11. Not sure why, but over the years, I've gravitated towards FL as my DAW of choice. Probably because of how easy it is to use and how versatile it can be (despite some majorly annoying bugs).

Here's the track. Let us know what you think!
