The Somme - WWI FPS

Greetings Trench Rats,

Long time no see isn't it? First off, allow us to say that we have been monitoring our networks and your voices, we deeply appreciate the love and passion that The Somme's community has, it really does warm our hearts.

To address the elephant in the room, yes we did disappear, it was for deep personal reasons that had relevance between all developers (families / work / finances). A handful of developers on The Somme, myself included do not develop games as a professional job, The Somme is a hobbyist project. Across the entire team we passively share the same opinion that we let the community down by not announcing what was going on, why we had disappeared and what is happening with The Somme.

We are in hope that the community accepts a sincere apology from the development team.

To clear any confusion surrounding The Somme, The Somme is not 'dead', we at the time abruptly paused. That has now changed and the TopHat team are now in a much better place than was previously and is why we would like to officially announce that The Somme has resumed development indefinitely. The downtime allowed us to reflect on what we failed at previously internally / externally, this will now play a huge role in how The Somme will be presented and developed, so don't expect plenty of media without a good reason for you to see it.

Kickstarter will not be happening, this doesn't mean you will lose the opportunity to play early versions of The Somme.

Greenlight, wow did you make your voices loud. We have at right this moment, 18,451 'Yes' votes, 4,800 followers, 1232 comments and 70,992 unique visitors. We're not worthy, we're not worthy!

We moved The Somme to the Unreal Engine 4 for obvious reasons and would like to state that The Somme is no longer a 32 player game, The Somme will now run as a 64 player game - Yes that's right, 32 v 32 across large battlefields. Unreal 4 allows us as developers to do wondrous things and that doesn't only mean to make the game look pretty. This a huge transition and we ask the community to be incredibly patient with us, there's a lot of new tech we're adapting too, it also means all of our art has to be revisited and that will take time.

The Somme is now on a fresh path, expect a lot of our external sites to be cleaned up / wiped, allowing the community to continue their discussions and wants for The Somme - we will be watching/reading/listening.

Yeah, and I guess developers should live in the forest and eat only bread, right? Our life is not free, we have to pay somehow for all the things. And working for this game is serious job for whole TopHat team.

realism all the way. accept no substitute. look to red orchestra 2 as a good example of intuitive realism. no arcade call of duty ********. good luck.

I'd say Red Orchestra 2 without unlocks and stuff like that. It doesn't really belong. Having unlocks kind of ruins how submersive the gameplay is for me.

Doppler,how large are the maps supposed to be and are you going to do full battles in one map. Example would be putting the Battle at the Somme in one map. Personally, I would disagree on that for historical reasons but I am nonetheless excited. Good luck fellows. I'm hopefully gonna be able to donate for your kickstarter.

In a perfect world, we would have them all in one level. But we're not in a situation where we could do that. Levels are separated like you see in most video games. The map(s) scale are entirely dependant on the Battle themselves. We take sections from each battle and expand on them. That's the best way I can describe their size without putting my foot in it. :P
