Plainly put, The House was developed as an experiment and a challenge to myself to make a game that is genuinely scary. Though viewed from an overhead isometric camera angle, my goal was to make the player feel immersed and connected to the world in which he was playing through. Rather than shuttle the player along a linear pathway, The House itself could be considered free roaming; the player has access to the entire house at once and is free to explore it as they please. As you do this, the game dynamically generates scares in order to ensure that no two games play the same way twice. Very little in this game is scripted.

Whether or not it is actually scary is purely up to you, the player.

"The House" is a stand-alone gaming experiment of mine. Sort of a "sand box horror game" or a "haunted house simulation"; it's my attempt at trying to make a game that's actually scary, through all the gameplay techniques I could muster. It doesn't have fancy 3D graphics, or physics. In fact, as somebody noted, it looks kind of like Zombies Ate My Neighbors. One day I kind of want to remake it using, say, the Source Engine, but I can't map for anything more complex than DooM (I can, however, texture; most of the textures used in The House were hand-crafted by myself). Until then, enjoy this isometric version.

The Study

I tried to release it for Halloween, but I missed the date by a few days. When I noticed Moddb had a "StandAlone Games" section, I decided to put it up here, too. If by some lucky chance you played this back in November, this is actually version 2.00; which polishes the whole game considerably more over 1.00.

If this gets good enough reception, I might go ahead and upload some of my other projects; but I fear they might be too fangamey for the Moddb crowd. Oh well! Enjoy The House, and here's to hoping you make it out! Oh, and if it actually scared you, make sure you drop me a comment on the game's comments page - so I know what I've done right, and what I've done wrong!

Love the graphics. Reminds me of the old DOS games I used to play when I was a few years old.
