Been working on a game I call The Beat. Its at a early stage where there is at least something to show to see if the community is interested.

You'll play as a Police Officer, in a world that punishes you for incorrect actions (arresting innocent people, excessive force) and be rewarded for smart actions (taking evidence from crime, catching the correct criminal, gathering victim information)

The AI is dynamic in all senses. It decides on creation if its a criminal, has warrants, what his/her name is, age, and so forth. Based off these statistics it decides when, where, and who or what to commit a criminal act against - leading to a dynamic, non-repeative cop simulation game. Its currently a very young working prototype.

There are already core features in the game, and I'm trying to finish them all up before moving onto the depth I plan to add. I look forward to being able to post updates of my work as I gets more stable and more complex down the road.

I'm currently in the process of updating the games graphics, adding sound, and buying additional assets to speed production up - the problem is, I need your help!

If you are interested in seeing this game look, and sound better then take the time to support! I can't do it all on my own. Thanks for your interest in seeing this project come true.

End of March update

News
Hey guys - just stopping in to type a update. I've spent a good portion of this month converting from old graphics, to new graphics. Things are starting to look a lot better lately. In terms of new features and what the means for the game, the list is as follows...

  • A new a more dynamic animation system for not only the player, but the AI as well.
  • Optimizations around the board, even with the graphical update I didn't loose any frames.
  • Improved AI local avoidance, making them able to handle a more complex world
  • Code started for AI to start fighting the player back (with fists, and firearms! More to show on that soon!)
  • The 3 stage confrontation features are 80% complete, Z, X, and C are used to escalate force (shout, non-lethal, and lethal means - all coming with a verbal warning that has a chance to make the criminal comply)
  • Early stage of firing and weapons handling mechanics in place (inaccurate pistol shots, graphical displays to show inaccuracy. Its going to make the player have to worry about his back-drop).
  • Sound has started to trickle into the game! I've been spending my own hard earned cash to bring ambient and other sounds slowly into the game to bring it to life! (The squad car will have radio chatter, the city has background noise - more to come!)
  • Added a basic main menu for the game, which was long over due rather then throwing the player right into the game (Soon you'll be able to save and load characters. Down the road this will matter once you get upgrades.)

I look forward to adding more needed animations (that are currently place holders) to arrest, move, load into the car, and for the player to open/close doors and load into the car himself in a more realistic manner. So for the next month, most attention will be on adding more depth into the animations list, and finishing out the basic AI template for it being more aggressive and giving the player something to worry about. Once these are in I'll start to implement the traffic - because right now the city feels rather dead.

Hey guys. No the games not dead. I recently was injured at work, with that said it was a head injury. My brains not on right and I haven't been coding much lately as a result. I'll get back at it as soon as I'm able to hold a thought for more then a few seconds.

Not dead though.

Yes I am. Due to limited time, I haven't been posting new media. Soon I'll sit down and post what Ive done.

In short
-Dispatcher now says name of street crimes taken place.
-Tones for crime taking place
-Arrest progression bar complete
-Searching of persons complete
-Player GUI starting to take shape
-Items for player added (flashlight, tazer, on-foot minimap, notepad for logging of information.)

There is more, but I've just been lazy in regards to keeping people updated. I've slow'd down a bit in progress, but again, thats simply not because of lack of interest, but lack of free time.

To make the game more interesting because i noticed there is not much sound you should allow us to play our own music. Also just to keep you on your toes it would be good if every now and then there was some sort of terrorist attack, maybe someone runs around with an ak-47 shooting everyone in sight also i know its a long shot but if you could have some basic voice acting such as pedestrians stopping and talking to each other or pulling out a phone and having random conversations plus the ability to talk to other officers, villains, and victims would make it great. Don't be too hard on yourself if you can't handle it instead of stopping the project get some help because it has potential.

In the list of crimes "active shooter" calls are already on it. They will be rare, and dangerous. Terrorist attacks are on the thinking board - but not on the list. Once I get to a more polished and completed state I'm debating either starting a Kickstarter program, or adding it to steam/desura for funding. All of the start money will be put into voice acting.

As of right now being able to play your own music is not on the list of things to do - you can simply run a underlying player if you wish, but I don't think right now this is the state of that type of code to be implemented. If you have any more ideas feel free to ask/share. I'm still working on it but don't have time to post up videos or progress, but there is progress believe me.

Hey guys. Just a few words. No I'm not dead, just very busy with my real job. Since my last update I've been working weekends and what feels like none stop. I'm currently pulling a 24 shift and writing from my phone. I've been able to add a progress bar when cuffing people so now that takes time. Dispatcher will now transmit a tone when crime has taken place, and arresting innocent people yields negative points bad guys yield positive. Next tasks are to finish vehicle pathfinding and add to their avoidance. I've been more so optimizing what I have so far since my times limited. Once I get vehicles with AI in them, can allow players to make stops and add the mini maps for the player and car, plus have dispatch give a verbal location of crimes, I'll feel back on track.

Just a small suggestion but just for shats and giggles could you push handcuffed people over? like off building or into the streets as a car comes by? just saying man, just puttin it out there.

This would be fun and honestly easy to implement. Perhaps set a limit to where if you push the person around to much (regardless of crime committed) you run the risk of getting a excessive force used and negative points. :D

I'll add that to the finishing up list and it will get looked at down the road when more major components of the game are complete.
