The Adventures of Rick Rocket is now half price!
The Adventures of Rick Rocket is a unique, 1950s-style, 2D space shooter with an epic story inspired by elements from classic sci-fi serials like Flash Gordon, Dan Dare, and Buck Rogers. It's the golden age of space exploration. As mankind begins to venture out into space, a mysterious alien armada appears and launches an all-out assault on the Earth. Space Command calls on its best pilot, Rick Rocket, to take the controls of the experimental X-01 rocket ship and repel the invaders. Join Rick Rocket on an epic adventure across the Milky Way as he tries to learn who the aliens are and why they attacked the Earth.
The game features a wide variety of missions, each with different goals and objectives. You'll not only participate in frequent battles, but you'll also fly reconnaissance, rescue disabled ships, capture enemy targets, explore uncharted nebulas and planets, protect command ships as they engage enemy capital ships, and more. This keeps the game fresh and interesting (I personally dislike games that are just level after level of mindless shooting).
Instead of displaying floating health bars above or below each ship, which I've always found to be disconcerting, my spaceships show real damage as they are hit. You can get a good idea of how damaged a ship is by how beat up it appears and by the thickness of the smoke trail behind the ship.
The game provides 12 different powerups that give you a variety of familiar weapons and defenses. Weapon powerups increase the strength of your shots or the number of shots you can fire, or add new armament to your ship (like various missiles or an EMP). Defense powerups add armor to your ship (so you can withstand more damage), provide you with shields, or repair damage. There are also scoring powerups that award you with bonus points or a 2X or 3X multiplier.
The Adventures of Rick Rocket is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The game requires an OpenGL-compatible graphics card. It supports joysticks and gamepads, as well as basic keyboard controls. Of course, you can remap the controls into any configuration you want so the gameplay feels comfortable to you.
If you've ever enjoyed classic space shooters, but haven't played one lately because they seem dull and repetitive, then download the free demo for The Adventures of Rick Rocket. There's plenty of depth and action in this game!
