Your castle walls are being smashed by siege engines, an enemy catapult surrounded by troops is rumbling ever closer, your villagers are starving, wolves have been spotted in a nearby cave, your barracks are desperately empty... just another typical day for a medieval lord in FireFly Studios' Stronghold 3. Since first launching in 2001, the Stronghold series has become one of the most respected in its genre thanks to its mix of precision village building, fast-paced real-time gameplay and dramatic sieges with hundreds of enemies swarming over your castle. Stronghold 3 promises to be the best yet, with a keep full of fantastic new features that ensure old and new fans alike experience a gritty slice of medieval life.

At the moment, Stronghold 3 is unfinished, yet has been commercially released. Initially steam users discovered they had a French only version so wasted their money. No retailers in the UK had it on release day due to a fiasco over supply and pricing while Amazon still seems to have phantom copies in the post.

The game itself has been rushed to meet a deadline. There are only a small handful of maps, all of which have many visible bugs and absolutely massive amounts of texture stretching. The game also lacks the promised worldbuilder and any form of single player skirmish. Multiplayer doesn't work, it's that simple and even if it did the combat mechanics are problematic at best, numerous times units will simply stop moving, charge at the enemy very slowly or just refuse to accept that there is a way to get from A to B despite it being a flat and open field.

Thus far the campaigns have also proven glitchy and unappealing with no personality beyond a narrator.

I'm sure these issues will be addressed over time and I am confident that I will be able to come back in a few months and change this review to at least a 5 or 6/10, but right now Stronghold 3 is definitely one to miss.

Freebuild is playable and fun. A large number of bugs have been fixed, however the lack of skirmish and poor campaigns still hammer this game's score down to a 3 right now, however Firefly are doing an excellent job in patching the game.

Edit 2:
Another patch, it's better but it's still broken.

No AI, no skirmish, almost no castle building. If it is like the first one I'm glad I never played that hunk of garbage.
