The alpha version of StarMade is completely free!

We absolutely appreciate any and all support via buying the game, making a private investment, etc.. :)

Some of the things that you can currently do in StarMade:

  • Explore: Infinite space in all directions using the X/Y/Z axis you can travel from 0,0,0 to 1000,2000,3000 and so on, but infinitely!!!
  • Design: Design the ship of your dreams, from famous ships featured in movies, book lore and other sci-fi/fantasy cannon. Or design something from your own imagination, connecting modules of ships together and challenging your efficiency and design skills. Do you create a ship that kills and destroys everything or a peaceful trading ship that is really just a smugglers ship in disguise?!
  • Customize: Create customized weapons, harvesting, repair, shield and other modules by grouping them into geometrical patterns to increase their abilities! With more modules being dreamed up by the StarMade team EVERY DAY, the possibilities are endless!
  • Multiplayer: StarMade was designed around multiplayer to begin with. Share control of your super massive ship, design a station with friends or conqueor the universe INCLUDING your pals, one sector at a time!!
  • Multiplatform: This game runs with Java and is OPTIMIZED to run as efficiently as possible, while we may experience some bugs and bumps in alpha and beta, we are more focused on gameplay and engine optimization.

There are many more features and we will do our best to create a better website, with fully imaged tutorials, videos and other goodies ( including contests and giveaways! ).

The best support we can get at this time is the word of mouth, get more people to not only play StarMade but follow us on twitter, indieDB and become involved with our community. Remember, you guys will be the core players that helped us launch this awesome game, and we will remember you.

You can find us on twitter @star_made

Blog RSS Feed Report abuse Latest News: StarMade: AI Simulation & Pirate Bases (+Video)

4 comments by schema on Jun 17th, 2013

Hello and welcome to StarMade,

this update introduces the new universe wide AI simulation system, as well as new generated pirate space stations, and ruins on planets.

Before I talk about the new features, here is a great let's play to start you off:

AI Simulation

Despite spawning AI, the universe of StarMade still felt somewhat lifeless, especially in single player. While the AI was now a potent opponent, it lacked the ability to fly across the universe on its own. Also, multiplayer servers were cluttered with spawned ship files of enemies that were very rarely used.

UpdateSet5

After lots of hours of work, a new system has been implemented: AI Universe Simulation. This system is a new layer on top of the AI, that is already in place. It abstracts a ship to a name, and can move it across the universe whether it's currently loaded because a player is near, or only an entry in the database. The whole database migration from the beginning of the year was targeted to do exactly that as efficient as possible.
The system works in ticks and can handle thousands of ships at once.

One of the first example of this new system is that shooting a shop now actually has consequences. If a player repeatedly shoots a shop, the trading guild will send out a fleet against him.

Furthermore pirates now operate much more focused. They will randomly patrol the space, and try to raid enemy ships. They will also send out parties from their stations to nearby players, as long as that station is not destroyed. Patrolling pirates will avoid faction space stations, but pirate stations will still attack as long as they are not destroyed.

UpdateSet5

Not only the pirates but also the trading guild sends out ships across the universe (and those to NPC factions are just the beginning). If you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, you might get involved in a space battle between NPCs.

Pirate Space Stations

A whole new type of station has been added to spawn in the universe. Most parts of this new station is randomly generated, and it's planned to make it even more random.

UpdateSet5

One deciding feature of pirate stations is, that they use a new placement systems, that enables randomly generated structures to use advanced blocks like weapons or docking. The challenge was that, blocks had to be placed and connected either afterwards or right away to a controller block that may or may not have been placed yet.

Furthermore, the system is now able to spawn specific follow up structures, in this case, turrets.

This means a pirate base will spawn fully capable of defending itself. Also, as a bonus for defeating a pirate station, it has treasure inside.

UpdateSet5

Ruins

The new system not only benefits the stations, but also any other structure. While this feature is just at the beginning, you can already find something mystical when you explore enough desert planets.

There are more exciting updates on the way,

Absolutely awesome game, very original and creative, features are great so far. I only encountered a very annoying problem, when I exit the ship (press R), my character is where i built it, it does not stay in the ship even if its all closed with door and gravity, had to start over twice because of that.

Recommendation: In the setup of the game, set the FOV default to 90. I know it's editable but when I was started the game I was stunned with many options which I honestly didn't have the patience to look at(Not anyones fault but my own). I feel setting the default value of the FOV would make life a bit easier for people who just want to jump in-game. The current default FOV really took out the enjoyment of the game, personally, and I know most other FPS games run at or around 90.

Take it or leave it, just a recommendation. Keep up the good work otherwise!
