From Single Cell to Galactic God, evolve your creature in a universe of your own creations.
What I think of what is arguably EA's most innovative title.

Spore was a really fun game to play. Its multiple play styles that
existed through the evolutionary stages were all unique. That isn’t to say that
they were perfect, I believe that they could all have been fleshed out much
more, pretty much every stage but the cell stage has the potential to become a
game by itself. There is no other game like Spore, but there ARE other games
like some of Spore’s stages, when like an RTS in the “tribal” and
“civilization” stages of the game, the elements aren’t as interesting as other
such games on the market, that specialize in the genre.
Gameplay: 8.5/10
Spore has an incredibly detailed world, with textures on everything
from plants to spaceships looking bright and realistic. When considering the
complexity of the engine that drives Spore’s mechanic, you can forgive the
occasional graphical hiccup. Swimming seems like a useless ability of your
creature, and there’s nothing to it, considering the scope of the game, and
level of detail to everything else, it’s surprising that the swimming seems so
pointless. But that’s only a minor complaint, on a design scale, Spore come
through shinning!
Design: 9/10
When you look at Spore’s original showing, it looked to be an
INCREDIBLE game, and while it’s still a lot of fun, I miss the “swimming
creature” stage, which was inexplicably taken out of the final game. Many
things, including a complex cell editor, the gradual building of the brain,
(which was re-worked into a much more simple system) and the tribal stage which
seems to be completely different. I like how the final, space stage was built
upon to add a “never-ending” feel to the game, and while there is the “ending”
of finding the “galactic core” the events never stop coming up. This is both
good and bad, and truly obsessive players will spread their influence over the
entire galaxy. Others, will be bored be the repetitiveness of the tasks, and
may just start a new game, to play things differently. This is another interesting part of Spore, while originally, it looked
like how you built your creature, and how you had them interact with others
would shape their “destiny”, it seems to be simplified to JUST how they
interact with others. In my opinion, this made the game a lot shallower, and I
was disappointed when my play-through with a 4 armed creature was almost no
different from my play through with a 4 legged creature. Don’t get me wrong,
Spore is a really cool game, and a lot of fun to play through, but for what it
was supposed to be initially, from the E3 2005 trailer, I’m disappointed.
Overall: 8.5/10
