Soul Saga Kickstarter Victory

Victory!

Holy cow, that was a crazy month! It took quite a lot of effort to break out of my nerd shell and put my face and emotions out there for the world to judge upon, but it was all worth it! We ended the Kickstarter at almost $200,000! The Kickstarter funds have already started to come in, though it can take up to a month for all transactions to be taken care of. I'm going to be doing my best to make sure Soul Saga is as good as it can be with the budget and time that I have to get it done. I have no doubt in my mind that it will only get better with each new game as well!
Art Contest
It was super fun to go through and see everyone's awesome Soul Saga pictures! I am honored that you have spent so much energy to bring the characters of Soul Saga to life in your unique styles! I have decided on the the 3 winners, and will make an official post about it tomorrow.

Writing Contest

I will be sending out a release form early next week ( or sooner ) that will allow my to read your writing entries. I currently haven't been able to read any without this signed, though. I'm excited to get in and read all of your creative stories! Please keep an eye out for the release form. =)

YouTube Live

I gave YouTube Live a little whirl yesterday. It seemed to be alright, but it's definitely a different type of environment than Twitch gives us. YouTube's chat room doesn't seem to be live, though it updates often on my screen, and it has at least a 1 minute delay in it's stream. This can make it feel a bit less personal I think, but I am mostly interested in YouTube's monetizing features that allow us to profit a little bit from the streams. However, I'm not really sure how much we'd be able to profit from it with only 50-100 people watching. I think for a month we will try out YouTube live to get a feeling for it and see how it goes. Even if it's only able to bring in an extra $50 a month for Soul Saga, that can add up to quite a bit over time to help pad a little bit of development. Also, there seems to be issues with some people not being able to view Twitch, so this may help them get into the loop better!

Next Live Stream

With that said, I would like to try doing our first YouTube Live stream this Saturday ( July 20th ) at 3 p.m. Pacific. If you guys like the experience, then we can continue doing it, but if there is an extremely strong urge to go back to twitch, then we can do that as well. Preferably we can all work together to find a way to make YouTube live work, though.

Development Plan

I have a very detailed development plan, and I would like to share the outline with you.

The Large View:

  1. Create Characters, Environments, and Music
  2. Start prototype coding (Beta Starts here)
  3. Start Level Design
  4. Start content coding
  5. Get Sound Effects
  6. Get Voice Acting
  7. Polish it all up
  8. Release on PC/Linux/Mac
  9. Implement any changes based on feedback
  10. Port to PS4
  11. Port to PS Vita
  12. Port to WiiU

A look into Character Creation:

  1. Create concept art
  2. Model character
  3. Rig and Animate character

Each one of these 3 character creation steps requires a different artist. Each will be working parallel to each other to help hasten the pipeline. In addition, the environmental concept art will be started as soon as the first character concept is created.

Developer Diary Frequency

During the next 30 to 45 days I will mostly be nailing out story elements and officially scheduling and lining up artists. During this time there won't be much to report on, so I will mostly just be announcing small things like Let's Play schedules.

Afterwards, we'll start delving into the art creation, which I will then have a little more to show, but most of the art I will be keeping under the cover for you to be surprised when the game is released. This will still remain at small, weekly updates.

Once the beta begins, you will start getting a LOT of news, most likely several times a week. This is because I'll be able to jump in and start getting my own hands dirty with code and adjusting elements based on your feedback. That news frequency will most likely continue throughout the beta and into Soul Saga's release.

Thank You!

I want to thank you again for supporting Soul Saga and allowing me to bring this story to life! I can't wait to get started! Once I nail out more contracts with artists I can give you a better deadline on when I am expecting things to get done. Until then... see ya at the Live Stream!

Thanks Fully Metal =D I'm glad you're still liking it! Sorry for the long silence from so long ago, but I really didn't want to waste anyone's time until Soul Saga was chugging at full steam. =)

Ow dang, the game looks really cool. I got a little disapointed when i read the word "Turn based". I think all turn based games sucks, hope you prove me wrong. Tracking.

Thanks, limst321 =). I actually need to update the info above. It's no longer a turn based game, it's a top down hack and slash.

I plan on making a more detailed "Update Post" about this change next week. It will cover both the "Why" I did and and the "How" it all will work. But in summary, it's simply just more fun for the PC, and there are more opportunities for different gameplay elements I can throw in.

Very awesome! I love the premise of Soul Saga and look forward to more updates.
Very nice models there... keep up the hard work.
I"m glad its a hack-n-slash instead of turned based... so much more action real-time.

When I was playing with the turn based I just wasn't feeling the action like I could in hack and slash games. I think the dynamic stories I have planned will work really well with this system, too!

There are few JRPG-esque games like this for the PC platform. I hope this game will be successfully released next year ^_^
The graphics are just perfect for the gameplay style. I hope that it won't change too much. I've seen some games that've become less likable because of too much gaudy adornments to the graphics.
I think I'm gonna miss Mana in this game. The battle gameplay conclusions wouldn't be as diverse as the one with mana. I hope you'll put some skill cooldown modifiers (something that works like mana) to shorten the cooldowns. (btw. Your mana alternative concept looks similar to the Final Fantasy - The Four Heroes of Light's.

Thanks for the kind words and advice, aurelius! That was definitely a concern I had at first with mana, but after prototyping the combat so far it seems alright. It seems that it's just important that skills have very diversive traits to them and not just varying degrees of damage and recovery times. And yes, I do have plans to allow you to have items and skills that can reduce the recovery times. =)

I've found that JRPGs with energy resources usually just have you stocking up on the maximum amount of mana potions and then spamming them anyways, removing the need to even have to worry about mana consumption.

If this system does end up taking out too much strategy, I have several other ideas I would like to implement as well. I promise to pay close attention to everyone's concerns and opinions as the game progresses.

I'll take a look at The Four Heroes of Light as well and see how they pulled it off. Thanks for the tip. =)

Most JRPGs like this have a Type/Element Advantage system. Are you going to implement it or create something new?
Will the weapons be really only vanity items? Maybe you should put some effect on weapons like + new skill/element/attack.
But whatever... I'm sure you can turn this into a great game!

(Will you be making a forum on your website for this game?)

I'm really hoping I can add some fresh elements and views to the JRPG game design by mixing in elements from modern Western game design. I'll make sure to gather data from everyone to help determine if the systems are actually fun or not when implemented and working.

I don't know if I will actually make a specific forum for the game. From my experience it's very easy for these types of forums to kind of "die off". I think there are better ways to get opinions and questions through different types of database layouts. I've seen a couple fresh ones around, so I'm hoping I can find something that can plug into my Wordpress website to give an easy public questions and answers or suggestions forms.

I also prefer people engage in the social media sites, because every time someone posts, it helps spread the word to their friends and advertise the game. I'm also very quick to reply to these social media sites, and I try to update them often.

Subscribing and being active on the Facebook or twitter page is the best way to support the game. I would really appreciate the effort from anyone who does this. =)

This is going to be my last question for awhile. I got some more questions but I'm going to spare them for sometime (or maybe post it on the FB page instead)

How are you going to handle monster encounters? Is it going to be "random encounter" like some RPGs? (Pokemon and some FF games)
If so, wouldn't the battles be too long if most skill need cooldown? Or will the skill cooldowns reset upon exiting battle?

So far the monster encounters are engaged when you physically touch an enemy while running around (similar to Xenosaga or Final Fantasy 13). the screen then transitions to the battle mode. I'm not a fan of random battles.

The recovery time is actually the time until that characters next turn, not an actual cooldown on the ability. So for example if you use a skill that has a very high recovery time, the enemy may get 2-3 turns in before that character's next turn. The closest game I can relate this to is Final Fantasy 10.

I know another game that has the same style as this: Zwei 2+
It has an equip and costume system that's a bit identical to this. It's in japanese though. maybe you should check it even until the 2nd dungeon. the graphics are quite good even for laptops with 64 mb vram. The water's rendering is awesome in the 2nd dungeon
