"You are Catherine Dubont.
The Laser Drill opened a cavern 10 miles beyond the surface of the earth.
They installed an elevator which you and some others took to go down all the way into the world of the unknown.
As you almost reached the bottom of the drill hole, the elevator rope broke and the cabin dropped down the last 100 feet.
Everyone is dead. All lights are gone.
The only thing you have left is your modern sonar scanner."

"SONAR" is an exploring-/horror-game with a minimum of graphics and a focus on sound-design instead. Though Catherine can't see anything, the player has to use the Sonar-O-Matic 3000, a futuristic sonar device with which she can scan her surroundings. Stuck in the dark, with no hope for rescue, Catherine has to encounter that she is not alone down here...

The game is entirely written in C# with XNA 3.0, using original graphics and music. Most of the soundeffects were found at www.freesound.org.

1 comment by JimSlade on Apr 17th, 2013

I really had fun programming on the Unity powered version of SONAR. I learned something about Unity, improved my coding skills and learned what a mess the code of SONAR really is ;) But to be honest, since the last post here on indiedb I never touched it again. The first reason was that I had to implement a workaround for the loading and saving of the levels which was easy in XNA but came out to be difficult using Unity. So I started to procrastinate...

But that's not the whole story. As I indicated earlier I have a fulltime job now which is really time consuming and lets little room to follow my hobbies. The job is great, though! I'm working at one of europe's most influencial animation studios and write concepts and treatments for children series now which is a lot of fun. Also, me and some others were building up this companies' game department (sounds big, but it's still indie, trust me). Those others are the guys from Golden Tricycle. Together with them I finally could do my hobby a profession and now work on a game for real money - not the few bucks, SONAR made - seriously: thanks for everybody who contributed and gave feedback!!

So, SONAR is (quite) dead right now, but the other project CLARK, Matthias, Felix, Maria, Hernan, Marco, Jonathan and Ella (and some other guys) are working on is hot and alive as hell! Maybe you stumbled over it while surfing on indiedb, for those who don't, here is a nice ingame video of that thing:

I am responsible for the whole narration and some additional programming. It's a nice team, a nice location and we have a lot of fun.

I'm not on this photo because I'm too ugly. That's also why I have to use Robocop as my avatar... :(

P.S.: I am putting together a selfmade 2D engine in Monogame in my freetime. There is some code of SONAR in there. So SONAR's DNA is still around. It heart still pumps... maybe it gets a second chance...

Just found the trailer of your game on YouTube! This game is gonna be awesome, and I can't wait to play. Looking great so far, as a retrogamer I love everything about it.

I've downloaded the second demo, but it won't let´╗┐ me install it on my Windows XP PRO SP3. During the installation - and after scalling down my screen - it shows me an error message, forcing the application to close. What are the minimum requirements, please?

Also, do you hare a Twitter?

Keep up the good work!

Oh, that's weird. Just tested it again and it runs fine for me. Could you tell me, what the error message says? Does the first demo runs for you?

I am running it on XP Pro SP3, too, so there should not be the problem. Hardware specs are:

WinXP/Vista/7
3 GHz single core
1.5 GB RAM
60 MB hard drive

The game needs .NET 3.5 SP1 and XNA 3.0 to run which should be installed automatically. Maybe there is the problem.

Have you checked any firewall issues? Also: Does anyone else has this problem?

P.S.: No, I don't use Twitter. But SONAR has a facebook page ;)

Aah, I think I know the problem... I'm trying to run it on an Acer netbook with Intel Atom N270 processor, only 1.60GHz, 1Gb RAM, 120Gb HD, etc... ^^;

Well, besides the fact I'd need an upgrade, the error message says: "Sonar has encountered a problem and needs to be closed. We're sorry for the inconvenience.", and when I click in 'details', the only relevant info seems to be:

>>>...You can not initialize SONAR from this location because it is already instaled on another place.

Stack trace:
em System.Deployment.Application .ApplicationActivator .CheckDeploymentProviderValidity( ActivationDescription actDesc, SubscriptionState subState)
em System.Deployment.Application .ApplicationActivator .PerformDeploymentActivation( Uri activationUri, Boolean isShortcut, String textualSubId, String deploymentProviderUrlFromExtension, BrowserSettings browserSettings, String& errorPageUrl)
em System.Deployment.Application. ApplicationActivator. ActivateDeploymentWorker(Object state)

---Internal exception---
System.Deployment.Application.DeploymentException (DeploymentUriDifferent)...<<<

...although I've only tried to install it once. It looks like the installer is trying to double the installation on the same location. Also, I found the installation folder and tried to run the game, but kept on getting the same error. Uninstalled it and tried to install the first demo but I got the same error. I have installed .NET Framework versions 1.1, 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2, 3.5 SP1, 4.0 and 4.0 Extended and XNA 3.0. I guess I need an upgrade... :(

Thank you for the quick response, I hope my info is useful.

Yes, it is, indeed! Try to uninstall the previous installation using your Windows Softwaremanager (found in the Control Panel, should simply be called "Software" in english, I guess). Then install the demo again.

There can be a problem with older installations, I have not figured out, yet.

The folder you deleted could be the folder made by the game itself (at least if you found it in your home directory and it was called "Sonar Demo"). In this folder the current save game as well as additional data are stored, not the game itself.
