Welcome to our 1st devlog article about our upcoming casual arcade based mobile game Solbot:Energy Rush. Through series of articles we would like to share our experience of how this game evolved, the development progress/phases, working remotely from different locations as a team and much more.

Our focus was to create something simple but fun to play. We started with pitches, slowly narrowing down options that eventually lead to Solbot: Energy Rush’s initial pitch, which was “Chroma Flyer.” Chroma Flyer was pitched as a 2D endless runner, arcade game with unique color changing mechanics. Originally the game was designed to have the player control a flyer and pass through gates in order to keep flying. Each gate would have a certain color and once passing through the gate must pick up all items corresponding to the gate color before reaching the next gate.

After some discussion on possible ways to make gameplay more exciting and how systems could work, our programmer developed a prototype. We used the prototype to decide whether or not this game would actually be fun to play and if people would play it, ultimately deciding whether this idea could be possible and successful. We held various play testing sessions with random people, gaming and non-gaming personnel. The results and feedback we got was positive and so we continued on flushing out planning and design documentation.

This is how the initial prototype looked like:

In the next post we will share more about our development progress, so stay tuned!
