With the 1.00 release coming up soon, I have opened up the character creator one last time. Through this, you can design your own character to be added to Solar War. This feature is available to everyone who bought or still buys the game before the release.

Since this was originally promised as a bonus for Alpha users only, Beta customers will only have 35 character points available to build their character instead the the 50 Alpha users get. Alpha characters also get a special trait that reduces promotion cost by 5 experience points.

To get started, hit the "Connect" menu item on the Desura page for the game and follow the instructions. Once you are done, you can start picking the stats for your in-game persona at Solarwar.net

Once you have finished making your officer character, it will be included in the game starting from the next released update (possibly excepting minor bugfix updates ending with a letter).

Connecting your Desura copy of the game to the Solar War site also gives you instant access to the latest standalone installers for the Windows and Linux versions of the game.

I see mention of scripted battles. Is this going to be a feature of the final game, or is it going to be more 4x space ship game as we know them already, with randomization and no scripted features?

It looks like some scores are calculated, but there is no approval. Public approval: % (no number)

Bug fixed for 0.31a. Note to everyone: Until the fixed version is out, make sure not to run completely out of ships. Having 0 ships, even for a day, breaks the score calculation. I'll see about getting the fix out as quick as possible.

The first alien attack has about 50% chance of obliterating the defences because thanks to power generators not exploding anymore they are much, much, much more resilient. Which gives them more chances to hit with their weapons, essentially one-shotting everything.

Especially the light cruiser is a major PITA to take down, killing my FA, leading to instant Game Over.

Do you mean the 3 scripted initial battles or the first "real" attack after that? What difficulty are you on?

The third tutorial battle has gotten a bit harder (and might be scaled down a bit in the next release), but it should still be doable. Remember that the quicksave button before any battle is your friend!

Yes, the first three scripted battles, they have gotten very difficult compared to 0.30, now that power generators aren't so vulnerable anymore. It's kind of a nuisance to have to redo the same battles over and over until I survive it, however.

Veteran difficulty.

Just ran the third battle 10 times with autoresolve. That got me 6 wins and 4 losses, even with the autoresolve AI wasting a few of its missiles on the small scouts. With some smarts, you should end up with even better odds than that.

That said, due to the random nature of hit rolls, you can just get a very unlucky streak, even if you do the right thing.

Quite a good game here. But quite expensive for old school graphics.
