With the 1.00 release coming up soon, I have opened up the character creator one last time. Through this, you can design your own character to be added to Solar War. This feature is available to everyone who bought or still buys the game before the release.

Since this was originally promised as a bonus for Alpha users only, Beta customers will only have 35 character points available to build their character instead the the 50 Alpha users get. Alpha characters also get a special trait that reduces promotion cost by 5 experience points.

To get started, hit the "Connect" menu item on the Desura page for the game and follow the instructions. Once you are done, you can start picking the stats for your in-game persona at Solarwar.net

Once you have finished making your officer character, it will be included in the game starting from the next released update (possibly excepting minor bugfix updates ending with a letter).

Connecting your Desura copy of the game to the Solar War site also gives you instant access to the latest standalone installers for the Windows and Linux versions of the game.

Adding multi-solar system campaigns would be a lot of effort, both on a technical and on a game design/balancing level. Yes, it would be cool, but due to the development time needed it's unlikely.

Looks like its my type of game. So my usual questions for this kind of game:

Random map generator and replayability?

How is the complexity and freedom ? (like does it focus on one aspect more than the other like Sword of the Stars' focus more on combat or is it as deep as Space Empires IV where you have the freedom to create your own race, ships, land units etc or does it hit the sweet spot like lets say distant worlds?)

I am really curious about this game

No random map generator, though the planet layout can be modded. One way replayablity is provided is through different diplomatic setups with your funding nations, which change some of your priorities for the rest of the game.

You can design your own ships, with a ton of options. You also have to make choices regarding your bases as it would ruin your economy to just build every possible building in every location.

You can try almost all of those things in the demo, which provides approximately the first two hours of the main campaign, plus a scenario which shows off some features from the later game stages.

I've played the demo, and I liked what I saw... The only gripe I have is the sprites, I understand the meaning behind it, but graphically, it could be better. Overall, 7/10, not perfect, but not bad.

Haven't been able to install/update in 2-3 weeks now. Keeps throwing errors and remaining "not ready".

Just tried it, starts fine for me. Have you tried contacting Desura support for this problem? I can't really give much help about the Desura client itself.

In the meantime, you can still play the game by downloading the standalone EXE installer. It should be under "purchased downloads" on the right of the main game page.

I see mention of scripted battles. Is this going to be a feature of the final game, or is it going to be more 4x space ship game as we know them already, with randomization and no scripted features?

The "scripted battles" are 3 fights at the very beginning of the game that serve as a combat tutorial. Apart from that, battles simply happen by one side attacking the other.

Ah, never mind. I see it's not 4X. It still looks interesting though.

Quite a good game here. But quite expensive for old school graphics.

+ Techno-tree
+ Designing own ships
+ The map
+ tactical battles
+ No bug

--- graphics (i don't really mind btw but others would)
- Officer's management quite difficult to understand and handle
- price
