Blog RSS Feed Report abuse Latest News: Become a character in Solar War

With the 1.00 release coming up soon, I have opened up the character creator one last time. Through this, you can design your own character to be added to Solar War. This feature is available to everyone who bought or still buys the game before the release.

Since this was originally promised as a bonus for Alpha users only, Beta customers will only have 35 character points available to build their character instead the the 50 Alpha users get. Alpha characters also get a special trait that reduces promotion cost by 5 experience points.

To get started, hit the "Connect" menu item on the Desura page for the game and follow the instructions. Once you are done, you can start picking the stats for your in-game persona at Solarwar.net

Once you have finished making your officer character, it will be included in the game starting from the next released update (possibly excepting minor bugfix updates ending with a letter).

Connecting your Desura copy of the game to the Solar War site also gives you instant access to the latest standalone installers for the Windows and Linux versions of the game.

Do you mean playing in a different solar system or playing across multiple solar systems?

I want to have a "random solar system" option at startup. The biggest problem is making those be balanced and interesting battlegrounds. So, probably before version 1.0, but in beta-land rather than in the near future. There are more important features to add before that.

However, different systems could already be modded in by anyone with a bit of effort. Everything about the solar system layout is in the save game or definition XML files which are completely open.

Having multiple systems in one game would be cool, but that is something that won't make it in before version 1.0. After that, I don't have a fixed development plan yet.

Sounds cool, one last question: Does that mean you are planning on continuing development after release?

Good question. I have not yet decided what I am going to do after version 1.0 is done. I'd like to focus on getting to that point first. :-)

Eh. The demo should definitly contain the ability to construct your own units. Otherwise it would be a mood point. I expect the thing that most player are interested in the free design of units. If you dont allow that in the demo, bad decision.

I was not planning on disabling unit construction in the scenarios. (Maybe as an option for later ones, but not for the one that is going into the demo)

So you could play around with that as much as you like, just with a few limitations on the number of resources you have for construction.

You are going to start with a number of preexisting units, because I don't want the new player to be forced to dive into unit design right away. I'm thinking of something like 2/3 prebuilt units and resources to build 1/3 more.

Hi there! I definitely want to put a demo out as soon as possible. The demo is one of the next items on my to-do list, right after a few important bug fixes and getting the Linux version of the game out.

I am planning for the demo to be a short-ish (1 hour?) battle scenario with pre-built units and objectives as opposed to the more free-form campaign mode that is currently in the Alpha. Building that is going to take a few days, but expect it some time within October still.

Quite a good game here. But quite expensive for old school graphics.

+ Techno-tree
+ Designing own ships
+ The map
+ tactical battles
+ No bug

--- graphics (i don't really mind btw but others would)
- Officer's management quite difficult to understand and handle
- price
