I have enjoyed the game so far but have a few suggestions regarding officers:
1) There are far too many, I have no interest in wading through 100+ officers to select an appropriate crew. Yes I know about auto assign.
2) The promotion thing is lame when you need to promote 79 officers = click fest
3) Officers should be renamed captains and be represented by one person not a crew of four.
4) There should be a shortage of good captains and a real shortage of great captains say a max of 10-15 total available to you at any one time.
5) You should have the option of posting a captain to your starbases etc. ala Deep Space Nine. Also possibly as colony captains.
6) Postings should take a week or more to complete so that you can't sneak a great captain in after knowing when a battle will occur.
7) Rescue chance is nice as losing a great captain should hurt
8.) Skill improvements should only come from time served as a captain - no risk, no reward
