Sky Nations is a multiplayer sandbox game where players can join together to build air ships(cannons and all!) and do battle across a vast world procedural world full of relics and machines from another age waiting to be plundered by daring sky captains and their motley crew.

The game is currently under development and there are much more features to come. The game however currently features:

  • Buildable and pilotable Airships
  • Unique procedural world full of different islands and machines
  • Simple crafting system to make use of the items you salvage
  • Player hosted persistant multiplayer Servers
  • Item Sculpter for creating unique wearable items
  • Easily reskinnable textures

Update 0.136


An update has been released released with a fair few bug fixes that were spotted with the influx of players from the IndieGameStand sale that has now ended. Halos and chat Badges have also been added for the respective players who deserved them. Check out the change log below for more detail. As usual you can download the update via the launcher.

Changes

  • Added option to server settings which can be set to “true” or “false”. Setting it to true will mean chunk and ship files are loaded up into memory on startup making reading very quick. This is useful for VPS’s and any kind of machine running the game server with slow read/write harddrives or high file i/o wait time(VPS’s have very bad i/o wait in most cases). However this has a memory impact. VFS is set as false by default (previously was always on). If your server has an SSD you can benefit from setting it to false allowing the file to be loaded from the harddrive instead significantly reducing memory use on large maps..
  • Added option to server settings which can be set to “true” or “false”. Setting this to true will mean all chunks and ships are loaded up at server startup and are not unloaded. Do not do this on large maps. This is best set to true on Team deathmatch style servers where you have a small map and want to remove any extra computation such as loading/unloading chunks. This allows for a very smooth experience.
  • Added Halos to the top 5 contributors.
  • Added chat badges for Koto, Sen, HumanCant Think, Kattehus, and Indie.
  • Changed server to space out chunk unloading to prevent occasional stutters.
  • Various improvements to server performance based on larger amount of players.
  • Added altitude(Y) to coordinates and put each coordinate on a new line due to decimal points of non-English speaking countries being confusing(where ‘,’ is a decimal point).
  • Added weight of ship to UI next to ship energy.

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed a bug where particle effects from thrusters would be left over in some cases after a ship had left the area or been destroyed.
  • Fixed a bug where particles would stop working in some cases.
  • Fixed a bug where rebinding the Nation window key would open the Nation window over the top of the Keybindings menu leaving you stuck.
  • Fixed a bug where the server wouldn’t delete some new chunks when all their blocks were gone in some cases and they’d reload after server restart.
  • Fixed a memory leak on the server.
  • Fixed ammo missing on player ui on chunk load in.
  • Fixed item scrolling missing sixth slot in item bar.
  • Fixed invisible players.

MrBenjamin I have an idea :D Why dont you add ghost airships in the future and we have to battle the ghosr.Than there will be a chest filled with loot!And than we get out of the boat and destroy it making it crash to the void :D

The game is primarily PVP, fighting over resources, territory,salvaged items and building with other players.

You have to get some resources to build ships and upgrade their machine parts if you want to travel around or to build bases/homes if you want to do that, that said you could just band with an existing group of players with a ship.

There are not any quests, its more about player content through interaction with each other, for instance betrayals, friendships and later into development fighting common causes such as against NPCs.

NPCs are planned to be in the game, but at this point in development, there are not any. There is a number of friendly and aggressive NPCs planned as well as 'world bosses' in the future. The unique problems the floating islands presents for NPCs means that it might take some time to get them to a point where I feel they are legitimately threats to a player and have interesting mechanics at the same time.

Towards the end of the week I'm thinking of doing a blog post about some of the planned features which will be a bit more elaborate. Hope I answered your questions!

Thanks! Currently you can only sculpt wearable items, such as hats, torsos, arms, legs and shoes. But If I can find a decent way to balance them stat wise you may be able to sculpt weapons in the future.

There will be monsters, though there are none yet. There won't be mineshafts, dungeons or strongholds due to the nature of the world being made of different types of floating islands of various shapes and sizes. There will however be different types of buildings and machines procedurally generated as relics for you to explore, which will be part of the landscape. I'm not sure what you mean by over worlds. Unless you mean other worlds? In which case there will only be one 'dimension'.

Great game that shows amazing promise! In alpha at the moment and you can tell there are great things in the future for it. The creator of the game seems to be very active on the official server and the community is very friendly. Some may see this as a minecraft clone, but it surely is not.
