The 8-bit Studios team are developing a "MOV" multiplayer online versus game free-to-play for PC's, next-gen consoles, smartphones and tablets. Pablo Rodriguez, CEO and Creative Director, started dreaming about Skara in 2009. By December 2012 he decided to go in with his friend, Cesar Ortega, to make his dream a reality. Together they founded 8-bit Studios and began assembling a team to develop Skara. Recently 8-bit Studios was licensed to develop Skara using Unreal Engine 4, a product of Epic Studios. We are dedicating all of our time and energy on creating the kind of game that every gamer would want to play. We rely on our supporters, knowing that by listening to them and by giving them an opportunity to participate in the creative process, we are sure to create a better game. That's why we have active social pages and forums and ask for lots of input--so we can put them directly into the game. After all, as gamers, we are very opinionated too and enjoy discussing our point of view

In this article I will show you the evolution of the Khärn character during the this year. From concept to 3D.

Posted by Psyshik on Dec 8th, 2013

When David (our concept artist) and Pablo (our CEO) started working back in december 2012, the Khärn race was one of the first things they wanted to draw. Something funny about them is that at the beginning, the name of this tribe of big and slow warriors was...Skara. Pablo loved that name from the very first moment he wrote it in the map of the seven realms. He loved so much that he decided Skara was going to be the name of the game, so he had to create a new name for these raw warriors. And Khärn also sounded good.

With the Durno characters we had a lot of problems choosing the right path, but Khärn did not cause as many problems. In the first skectches David drew I saw a barbarian-like warrior that was exactly what I was looking for. Without knowing it.

The next step was create the first 3D model for the Khärn character. Our former character artist David Vercher sculpted this hi-res model that was hand-painted by David Güell. We are trying to avoid the photo-realistic look for characters, so all the textures are painted with different brushes, giving this sense of natural paint over the characters body.

The hi-res model was retopologized to be used on the engine, but keeping the hi-res textures. The result can be seen on the alpha gameplay videos that we released before the E3.

With the new engine we are able to improve the models, add more bones to the skeleton and show more triangles. So we decided to give a twist to the Khärn warrior and redefine some aspects of the model. You can check the differences in the next concepts:

Lot better proportions and anatomy than the first try! Howewver - he looks taller than the concept and is a kind of different personality.

In the first concept drawings these characters have even less natural proportions and I like it. Depends on the game you want to make though. The charactermodel itself is looking great!

In the game it looks even different and bigger than the others races. I will soon put some pictures to show the in-game result!

Moreover the armors of this character will have a particular aspect, they will all be made with resources from animals and fallen warriors.
