Sauerbraten (a.k.a. Cube 2) is a free multiplayer/singleplayer first person shooter, built as a major redesign of the Cube FPS.

Much like the original Cube, the aim of this game is not necessarily to produce the most features & eyecandy possible, but rather to allow map/geometry editing to be done dynamically in-game, to create fun gameplay and an elegant engine.

The engine supporting the game is entirely original in code & design, and its code is Open Source (ZLIB license, read the docs for more on how you can use the engine).

In addition to the FPS game which is in a very playable state, the engine is being used for an RPG which is in the preproduction phase. Additionally, Proper Games ltd are the first to use the engine commercially. dot3 labs is a company started by the creators of sauerbraten that offers commercial support.

SabiCube 1.0

A single-player total conversion of Cube2-Sauerbraten with focus on adding rpg/adventure elements. This package includes first chapter of the game ZetaProject, a test-map to display the new features, and with hundreds of open-source models and textures game-ready.

The goal is to make game-building as fun as playing a game, with intuitive menus and guides to help anyone make their own open-source rpg/adventure game, without prior knowledge of programming or 3D-modeling.

SabiCube 1.0

This is a work in progress so editor-workflow might change in future releases as we add features to the engine, but maps from the original sauerbraten (or compatible engines) will be able to load with minor adjustment.

SabiCube is tested on 64-bit (Kubuntu) and 32-bit (KXStudio), and we have provided a binary for both, so it should work, if you are lucky, If not... please follow the installguide found here :

Some of the major changes we have made:
main-menu and gui re-arranged to fit SabiCube options
basic inventory and inventory-items, works without any scripting
large collection of open-source map-models/textures available
focus on firstperson singleplayer
added new monstertypes
experience is granted when killing monsters or solving quests
destructible wood-crates with scriptable random loot
new hudgun animations: crowbar, pistol and shotgun
added file-browser to editor
two new item types, pickups and npcs/triggers
dynamic map-browser
simple scriptable game-menu
item pickups have weight (scriptable)
Player will be encumbered when carrying too much
playerskill strength allow player to carry more
playerskill health permanently increse playerhealth
playerskill energy permanently increse playerenergy
added crouch/sneak and speedrun, running require energy
health and energy-bar
savegames (autosave)

Further development:

As mentioned, we plan to focus on a more traditional rpg-style with melee/magic-combat, this is not to say that we're abandoning ZetaProject, we hope that the improvements we make to the new game, may be used to update and/or add a new chapter to ZetaProject.

You can follow the development on ModDb: where the latest "stable" release is available for download, and you can download the development version of SabiCube on GitHub:

I'm not really too sure what you are trying to say, but screen tearing has nothing to do with OpenGL or DirectX. Screen tearing is usually caused when the frame rate of your video card is much higher than what your monitor can support. You can eliminate screen tearing by using V-Sync (adaptive V-Sync is usually best, if available).

Everytime i use v-sync i get a weird square like thing at the left bottom corner of my screen and it is very irritating.

This is very strange indeed. While I can say that it is not caused by V-Sync directly, I also can not say what the cause is. I would guess that you have some 3rd party program that is causing this. This is probably not the most appropriate place for me to try and help you though, but I would suggest that you visit the forum for your video card manufacturer. They all have troubleshooting forums. Chances are that someone over there has encountered your issue and can help you with a solution.

It needs openGL so it's cross-platform. DirectX is Windows-only.

Very fast playing game. Has nice graphics and is not hardware intencive. Quake 3 like. But it's not suitable for modding, the source code is hard to understand and modify, strange forums and no tutorials.
