Hey there!
So, we've finally made it to a point that we got
to get the medic feature into gameplay! While you might wonder why opt for getting wounded and hope for a medic to come to get you back into game rather than just dying and running back to the zone as another soldier, it's primarily the rare weapons that are meant to make you want to get that vest on; otherwise you'll lose the rare weapon on respawn.
In this version, we've also enabled the rare weapons in classic single-map matches, which means those PvP oriented online matches, or single player, might experience some player(s) getting temporarily overpowered if they manage to find a rare. Easiest way to find one is to listen, it's the bots that usually happen to bring them into a battle, but you might find one in a crate too. Can't wait to see the players getting hunted for the weapons they carry :)
Other than that, plenty of tweaks here and there, a new weapon, a new mortar call, and a hefty amount of new modding potential; map size is open now, for one. See the detailed change log here.
0.89 or 0.90 will see plenty of changes under the hood to make it easier to create server-specific settings for match resources without clients having to download overlay mods to be able to join a server. This should make it easy to alter active weapons, items, vehicles and factions strictly on server side, clients will get the relevant info from the server to configure their game session accordingly and load the needed resources if they have them available. This will make it possible to set up a broader variety of matches in single player too, hopefully including single player Invasion.

This is a great game. I've described it to friends as a combination between General Chaos, Cannon Fodder, a rather obscure but innovative game called Net War and once vehicles are added, even a touch of Warhawk. On top of all of this, the developer is great and really listens to the community.

I saw your review and it is very one-sided.
Let me boost up on some of the things I feel about the game.
The guns are satisfying. It is realistic. When you get shot, you don't have some cheesy health bar, you have a chance at dying depending where you got shot, and a small random chance. I could fire the guns at enemies all day and still think the game is great! There is a kill log, if you press 'Delete' it brings up a player list as well as a few statistics. I don't see what's wrong with the AI. I personally think it is great, and they've already had MANY tweaks. Try playing Pre-Alpha v 0.1 versus the newest version. You'll see many improvements. :P And now, about the aiming, it is height based. Wherever your crosshair is, is the height at which you'll shoot. That is why instead of shooting behind the enemy, it's best to aim ON them instead. There is also a miniature crosshair to show where you'll be shooting, but remember, there is a bullet scatter factor applied with the random death on hit. The slowness of the mini-crosshair is for a reason. MANY people complained when it was instant, and everyone agreed upon the current speed. And for the lack of explanation, yes, there is a planned help screen in the coming versions. Sorry for your dis-enjoyment, but stick with it, you'll see the fun sooner later. If you do happen to have further questions, post it on the forums. (http://www.modulaatio.com/runningwithrifles/phpBB3/index.php) Thank you for your review though. Your insights will be taken into consideration. ;D
Well here’s a lot of what I have to say run on sentences, rambling train of thought and all. Hehe I make you read loads.
Well I'll definitely start by saying I never intended to imply I did not enjoy the game in the hours I’ve put into this it was never not fun nor did it seem like it would get dull quick like my golden shovel. It’s more like I was expecting a roller coaster with loops but it didn't have any it’s still fun but roller coasters need loops.
Please don't read too far into that roller coaster line because I was not implying that this game isn't thrilling enough or that I literally wanted my character inverted more often just that the game is fun--very fun just I wanted and expected more fun. I am also aware that there are good roller coasters sans loop like Space Mountain or any of my roller coasters in my Cavalcade series of rides in Roller Coaster Tycoon. This is game I will tell good things about to my friends when I get some.
But as to my review as a whole for me it describes my impression of the game I think a lot of the differences are down to personal taste in what we think perfection or correctness is and as I'm pretty sure you are not my wife I don't think you'll Jedi mind trick me into changing what I like.
Also my scores tend to be lower than the average review score on Desura but that's how averages and statistics work. I believe it was Confucius that described review scores best he say there will be some who give everything a 10 some who dole out 1s like Dole doles out Dole bananas and there will be people who tend to give generally high scores and those who give generally low scores but statistically games will get gamers who provide every color and flavor review combo there is which is generally good (except for those fruit cocktail things that's stupid).
To compare it to something else Kill Fun Yeah looks like a great game I love so many things about it but the way it has come together at this moment is isn't that enjoyable for me and its certainly not what I want.
Looking at things like the grey aiming aid moving slowly are clearly not to my preference because you found out what people want and I'm on the edge of the bell curve (it’s the good edge and I must say I wouldn't want to be anywhere else so much more roomy and airy). But it’s a bell curve and my score depends on where I want things not on what is best for the greater good. Maybe a slider for the speed would satisfy asshats like me but then again I’m an asshat who might just continue to be an asshat. ;)
Fun fact spell check doesn’t think asshat is a word.
Probably the thing I feel most strongly about is that the guns are not fun and satisfying. Whatever it is about the combination of sound and feel along with smell and top down perspective didn't grab me. To make the above comments into one of those pros and cons critique sandwiches I will add there were other decisions that I found interesting and engaging like the ‘realistic’ health system. Okay that’s an open-faced club but technically still a sandwich. Comparing it to a similar top down game Endless war 3 (which I loved and apparently has sequels I haven’t played) there are a few rifles which are really fun hold in my grubby little virtual paws. Endless War 3 also had enough weapons variety to make a lead loaded pu pu platter and that makes the game an order of magnitude more interesting. I wouldn’t say a nice little game needs a Time Splitter amount of guns but a couple dozen is crazy awesome.
Fun fact 1 Borderlands = 30,000 Time Splitters in the gun variety counting world.
I am certain that my score will change over time as the game gets tweaked and gets that extra 32% of its content but as it stands now I would like to know how my review counts as one sided. You mostly brought up things that we differ in opinion about if that is what you meant by one sided I disagree more than a pack of live, livid hornets disagree with my sexy sexy stomach. My views are meant to be my views I understand that certain things like what everyone else wants effects how the game turns out but I’m not meant to make a review based on that. Am I?
Also I know my score stings a bit (that’s why I willing to put this much effort into a response I can empathize with developers and I understand the economic and emotional value of reviews. I feel that and take it into account when I write a review. I think hard about the score I want to give a game (more so if it will be below the average) and I am never fully satisfied or confident in my score because I respect the power reviews have.
Something else it certainly is nice to get lots of developer interaction with the community I know I saw in at least on review that noted people feeling please with your input and interaction with the community in a mutually beneficial way and that is certainly always a plus. Because of that you certainly seem like a good developer I want to like and support but at the moment my review score does reflect my opinion of the game.
I am very excited to see how the development of this game unfolds and I look forward to trying any and hopefully many future titles.
Also things like AI I didn’t factor into my review score negatively but about the problem—or what I consider a problem ;)—with the AI was I noticed numerous times a single guy or up to a dozen guys would be sitting still far away from the current battle area a couple times I also noted that some of those guys were aiming in odd directions like at buildings. It may be that something about how and where the enemy will spawn next made holding some point seemingly in the middle of nowhere strategically advantageous but it definitely seemed unlikely. (Also if something like that was advantageous without thing like the future feature of a help page there is no way for me to know what they are doing.) Also when I would run by these lazy bits of computer code I couldn’t get them to follow me to their inevitable deaths.
Also also also there were some instances where the enemy made some odd strategic decisions in who they would shoot at or follow and when to do things like make a move to round a corner and attack when I clearly waiting for them.
About aiming off a roof at a guy that kind of thing I usually chalk up to me sucking because I was born a vacuum of a man but I do feel from replicating the situation that something fishy is up with that. When I said aiming over a guy I meant over his head so directly on him not beyond him and even if the little grey dot was saying I was actually hitting the roof of the building it would have been impossible for him to hit me from below if I couldn’t get him from above.
Fun fact that is why you will always find me ******* on people from above and not below.
Also it’s time to wind this down 1333 words is plenty but I will be making an account with your forum to keep up with development.
Grr 2000 character comment limit! And comment spam speed limit.
Ahh, that is long. :P (It is 12:00 AM lol)
But yeah, I see your point and I didn't mean to be rude or angry or mad or anything, I was just explaining some of the things you mentioned. Sorry if you did feel I was being rude. :P
No I never took it as rude at all. :)
Modulaatio.com Demo here.
Thanks I've knit you some socks to show my thanks but my dog vomited on them.
I'm honored. :P
