Rooks Keep is a PC based, fantasy melee deathmatch/arena game. Best described as "UT with swords", players will battle it out in a selection of game-modes, across a variery of maps.

-Fantasy Deathmatch:
Primary to Rooks Keep is the 3rd-person combat system involving quick and slow attacks, blocking, parrying, dodging and a selection of upgradeable skills. Each character also features their own unique skill. In addition, a basic character skill system allows asymetric fights, eg: The Rook is more powerful than the Pawn. Players can use skill points to either use a more powerful piece or upgrade their current one.

-Game Modes
Rooks Keep features a selection of game-modes, from free-for-all and team based modes, to Chess variations:

  • Deathmatch: Free-for-all combat; killed or be killed.
  • Team-Deathmatch: Any number of teams duke it out for victory.
  • Conversion: Teams attempt to convert members of other teams to their own side by killing them. Last alive on the team becomes the Warlord!
  • Combat Chess: It's Chess, but with a chance for the victim of an attack to fight their way out of certain death.
  • Classic Chess: Classic Chess mode; the victim does not fight back..
  • Last Man Standing: You have a set number of lives; be the last man standing after the dust settles.
  • Last Team Standing: You, and by extension your team, has limited lives; fight to be the last team standing.

-Factions & Theme:
Rooks Keep currently features two unique factions; the forces of the Kingdom and the beasts of Darkspawn. The game is set in a varierty of detailed fantasy environments, featuring maps for both deathmatch and Chess modes. Players will get control of six character per side, based on traditional Chess pieces (Pawn, Rook, Queen, etc) and each uniquely animated and ready to commit hideous acts of carnage.
Rooks Keep also features an extensive blood and gore system for particularly messy battles.

-Multiplayer & AI:
Singleplayer, Online and LAN is supported for all game-types, where up to 32? players can fight it out in all the non-Chess modes. AI bots can be added to all deathmatch game-modes and there is even a slightly functional Chess AI! Alternatively, players can simply play on the same computer in the traditional Chess mode.

-Unreal Tech:
Rooks Keep is running on Epic Games™ excellent Unreal® Development Kit™ which allows us to create great looking environments and pieces.

We will be revealing more information and features as the project evolves, so stay tuned.

Just played chess with someone online, and it's easy to miss a move made by them. You also can't go back and view the history. Not sure it'll spam that chat, but what if you got a message that said what got moved to what square.

Just want to say we're working on trying to get a permanent server up as soon as we can. I guess no one else out there is hosting one yet :)

It's complicated by the fact that UDK does not support Linux, so getting a (cheap) server is not easy :\

A bunch of us can't get the game to run through the Desura client. Do you know what is wrong?

Your not the only one, the problem is no one seems to be able to host or are able to forward their ports. There was also no feedback when trying to connect.

There was also few issues, that has just been fixed with 1.1

I suggest going to the groupees website where Rooks Keep is currently being sold and to use that chat room to find people to play with. It's the most likely place you'll find people that just bought the game. And a means to test if the server you hosted is actually working.

To host a game I think 55001 must be forwarded. And when you Host a game, under the server tab, you must check the "online battle" box.

If all else fails, use Hamachi.

And if there's people out there that can host dedicated servers, even just for a small while to get the ball rolling, go for it.

Two issues that may be confusing people:

Desura creates a link to the game's installer when you ask it to create a desktop shortcut.
This results in the game attempting to reinstall each time you launch.
The proper executable that needs to be linked is UDK.exe found under C:\Program Files\Desura\Common\rooks-keep\Binaries\Win32 (or 64 if using a 64-bit Windows OS)

Compatibility mode for all users should also be set to admin by right clicking on UDK.exe to access it's properties menu otherwise game options will not save upon exiting the game.

I'm having the same issue. My game is already installed on a separate unprotected drive so the suggestions below do not solve it.

found a work around on the forums to fix this. seems the game isnt allowed to save its settings in a program files fold, so just change the install path to something else and it should stop doing that.

How do you change the install path? I could not see it in Desura settings.

Also, Why does Desura keep having this problem, it's Really annoying. I don't experience this nonsense with any other gamng client.

Ah, UAC combined with "protected" folders :| It can't create teh config files to save the settings if UAC doesn't let it. Install to a non-protected folder, such as "D:\Games\xxx" etc.

All features work as advertised, and there's a lots of awesome features that's missing in other AAA titles, like mod support, LAN, and even gamepad support.

That and it's extremely fun.
