Rooks Keep is a PC based, fantasy melee deathmatch/arena game. Best described as "UT with swords", players will battle it out in a selection of game-modes, across a variery of maps.

-Fantasy Deathmatch:
Primary to Rooks Keep is the 3rd-person combat system involving quick and slow attacks, blocking, parrying, dodging and a selection of upgradeable skills. Each character also features their own unique skill. In addition, a basic character skill system allows asymetric fights, eg: The Rook is more powerful than the Pawn. Players can use skill points to either use a more powerful piece or upgrade their current one.

-Game Modes
Rooks Keep features a selection of game-modes, from free-for-all and team based modes, to Chess variations:

  • Deathmatch: Free-for-all combat; killed or be killed.
  • Team-Deathmatch: Any number of teams duke it out for victory.
  • Conversion: Teams attempt to convert members of other teams to their own side by killing them. Last alive on the team becomes the Warlord!
  • Combat Chess: It's Chess, but with a chance for the victim of an attack to fight their way out of certain death.
  • Classic Chess: Classic Chess mode; the victim does not fight back..
  • Last Man Standing: You have a set number of lives; be the last man standing after the dust settles.
  • Last Team Standing: You, and by extension your team, has limited lives; fight to be the last team standing.


-Factions & Theme:
Rooks Keep currently features two unique factions; the forces of the Kingdom and the beasts of Darkspawn. The game is set in a varierty of detailed fantasy environments, featuring maps for both deathmatch and Chess modes. Players will get control of six character per side, based on traditional Chess pieces (Pawn, Rook, Queen, etc) and each uniquely animated and ready to commit hideous acts of carnage.
Rooks Keep also features an extensive blood and gore system for particularly messy battles.

-Multiplayer & AI:
Singleplayer, Online and LAN is supported for all game-types, where up to 32? players can fight it out in all the non-Chess modes. AI bots can be added to all deathmatch game-modes and there is even a slightly functional Chess AI! Alternatively, players can simply play on the same computer in the traditional Chess mode.

-Unreal Tech:
Rooks Keep is running on Epic Games™ excellent Unreal® Development Kit™ which allows us to create great looking environments and pieces.

RuneStorm, could you possibly get this game working via the Desura client? I have to keep reinstalling it. I'd prefer to play it through Desura so I can keep track of it as well as my other games and their updates. Thank you.

I second this, big time. The reverting to "Not Ready" in the Desura client after restart of client is an error on the developer's end. It almost always a problem with a script that has a mispelling or some other small error. This issue has manifested with several titles where the developer needs to correct the error and resubmit, then usually requires one final re-install for the users. This will continue be a giant hassle in this game until the developer addresses it, but it's been months.

Are you out there, Developer? This is still a frustrating problem with your software - having to go through the re-install process between every Desura launch.

Just an update on this: I've been trying tons of **** to try and get it going, but so far no luck. Still gonna keep going though! Been pulling hair out over this one :\ Really doesn't help that our upload speed is about 20-40kb... Will keep you posted when I find the cure!

In a frustrating turn of events, Desura support is being incredibly slow in responding to my emails. Forwared around the place to no avail.. Grrr.. Hopefully this will be solved soon!

Not sure if I should post this here, but I bought the game in the build a greenlight bundle from groupees, and the cd-key provided doesn't work for the game for some odd reason (in-game that is, desura detected it perfectly and it is already in my games list)

By the way, the game seems to be good and I feel that this one is some of those which gets better as time passes, can't wait for a mutator that allows total mutilation (Blade: Edge of Darkness anyone? :P).

Your modding talent precced you and it was great, hopefully you manage to get the same feeling on gaming industry, I desire you the best (at least right now I feel like you did it, I hope I'm not wrong ^^u)

Nothing more, nothing less, I hope I can fix this and play with others soon, anyway, good luck with the times to come ^^.

About hte Key problem, just requested one on desura and it worked... Odd but at least it is fixed, hopefully this helps anyone with the same problem.

All features work as advertised, and there's a lots of awesome features that's missing in other AAA titles, like mod support, LAN, and even gamepad support.

That and it's extremely fun.
