Rogue's Tale is a single player turn-based dungeon crawling game. The game takes place in a place called Frostmourn Keep and its underlying dungeons located in the World's End Mountains. The goal is to overthrow the current king of the Frostmourn Keep and become the new king. A demo version and game guide can be found on the homepage. Key features: - Classless character building where you can choose to be the kind of rogue you want. - Seemingly unfair, untimely and unforgiving deaths which are also permanent. - Ways to counter these deaths by learning the game mechanics. - Random dungeons and encounters. - 24 talents to build your character with. - 30 spells to build your character even further. - 30 heritages that make your next character stronger. - 30 challenges to complete once you get the hang of the game.

Another year and another version. 1.06 should become available in about a day or so featuring new overlay tileset, new boss level with lots of tentacles, new creatures to tackle, minor survivability buff for low level characters in the form of snails (lots of them), heritage dog and an in-game level editor.

...spent many days to play / learn this game and it was very frustrating at many times.
but strangely i always came back for another session, then played couple of hours till i got wiped out again and again and again....
i understand if ppl find this game too hard, unforgiving and totally unfair. but as i see it, thats exactly what nibbe wanted this rogue-like to be! and i totally like it this way! just give it some time and as you unlock some heritages, you'll increase your chances to survive - though u will still die quickly if u aren't cautious. and the longer u survive, the more ways u discover to stand against the mobs.

this game is very addictive, its easy to control (unlike many other rogue-likes) and makes the best out of the content it offers.

Agreed. I am having a hell of a time but i love it. I still haven't unlocked anything but i'm learning as i go. those videos just posted helped me out a bit as i only watched the 1-10 level video. I figure if i make it to level 10 i'm happy for now. Made it to level 9 then i kicked a grave and got my arse handed to me by a warlock, LOL. Also if there are any easter eggs or secrets, tips to find. if there are any clues or suggestions on how to get them that would be a bonus to us having a hard time with this game and losing heart and patience to keep playing. I just think that would be a bonus to your gamer audience, tnx. This game is one of the best investments i made since i bought Tales of Majeyal here on desura. Keep up the great work and just one more thing. Is there any talk of a new patch here on desura with anything new coming, Inquiring minds want to know these things. ;)

I'm currently working on new dungeon generation algorithms to have more variety with the dungeon layouts. When the new version is ready it should come out here first but I can't say any exact dates yet.

Added 8 videos showing sword and board gameplay from level 1 to 20. The character's starting equipment comes from heritages unlocked during earlier runs and reaching that point will take some time and learning how to survive against various enemies and situations.

I agree with you pretty much 100% when you talk about this being a hard game because it is a roguelike. These youngsters today don't know what it was like to play games like the original Wizardry on an Apple IIe, or the early IBM PCs, or the roguelikes for that matter. Very unforgiving, very difficulty, but when you finally beat the game, the excitement and sense of accomplishment you feel is damn well worth it! You know you didn't just hack through a game with mindless ease, you had to think, perform tactical maneuvers and pray for some luck to even get past the first few levels. Lot's of fun.

I don't see why you thought it necessary to refer to my review in your own.

And as for the difficulty, I have played hundreds of roguelikes; I'm a roguelike developer; I like to think I know what I'm talking about, and this game is too random, making it too hard.

You can't offset jabs at me with all this "blessed day" nonsense either.

I can see $1-$3 for a game like this. But $9?

Might grab it if I see it in a bundle. I llike the sound effects in the video, but the game itself looked a little but bland, and half-baked.

If the graphics improve (Eg, more types of background tiles) , or the price goes down a significant level , I might grab a copy.

Game 1:
I start in a room of 5x5, with only a door.... i died self-headbutting the door ! :-/

Game 2:
I start in a empty room, open a door, move in the new room and get one-shotted by 12 damage by an invisible snake... :-/

I think the difficulty is caused by too much random and not enough procedural in the design.

Thank you for your opinion and awesome review. If you actually played the game and not just bash it on the comments, you would've known that you can pick lock doors in addition to bashing them with your head...

After losing 35+ character, i decided to use cheat engine to actually have a chance to try what the game have to offer (infinite life) in higher levels, and i was disappointed to notice that this game have very little to offer. There are almost no upgrate in gears. I started a dual welding dexterity-costitution rogue, and i was expecting to find better dagger in the higher levels, but as a matter of fact i was a lv 20 character and the damage of my dagger was the same of the beginning, 1d3+1... disappointing...

I globally have a low perception of how my character improved by leveling, that's a bad thing too, expecially when you have 23 life point and the medium damage of the overwhelming group of enemy in the last level is 12+various poisons...

I feel that this game is more like an advanced beta, than a real, well polished game.

I really kinda like this game, but each of its flaws stab me back and kills me.

I added a screenshot of a level 20 character that is ready to face the king (the same one that was used to make the video by the way). That should give you an idea what to expect when you take the time to properly build one.

This game is not well-balanced with respect to the difficulty the player experiences as the game goes in. Basically it seems there is too much randomness and not enough procedural stuff going on in the design of levels. As others have pointed out, you can start out surrounded by three enemies.
