No one can ascertain the current Earth year (or if there is still Earth at all), so we start the count from Vostorg-7 year 0. This year marked the arrival of a joint Russian-Chinese colonization probe on Vostorg-7, a probe dispatched a very long time ago - in the early 21st century of Earth. After a long interstellar odyssey, it finally reached the unforgiving yet potentially habitable planet. The initial dreams of forging a unified spaceborne human nation were soon abandoned, as differing visions for utopian societies took root. Instead, seven independent human colonies emerged from the cosmic dust. While most of these colonies succumbed to rapid deterioration, with their inhabitants mutating into otherworldly beings or descending into feral lifestyles amidst Vostorg-7's unforgiving terrain, two colonies stood out as bastions of Man’s determination - the Derzhava and the Planet Cult.

Hey, at least the maintenance crew won't have to deal with enemy helicopters as the VTOL will swat them out of the sky before they reach the airfield...

Chopper on chopper action works just as well, though.
And I doubt a chopper only assault on an airfield would do all that way no matter what was in it.

Love the design, but wouldn't a Plasma Cannon be more expensive than a F-35?..?

Well, technology doesn't always have to move in the way we are used to. So it is possible for certain tech to move faster in this alternative universe.

Think about it. Modern MBTs are made of various advance materials, have lots of computers for its functions, some mount active defenses... yet all of them currently use a gun that fires a piece of metal via chemical reactions (like cannons in the old days), though said piece of metal may contain advance computers and sensors itself and may in fact be a sophisticated shell with advance explosives. we really should be having railguns in MBTs by now...

In short, we really can't be too sure about the pace of technology advances.

Railguns would probably need replacing a whole ******* lot unless you load single use rails along with the projectile. And given the forces involved, as well as reliability in field conditions...not sure if it's really worth it yet.
And a cannon is far more versatile than a railgun. You can fire high explosive, fragmenting, anti tank, sabot or even missiles out of a cannon while a railgun probably won't have much difference in its payload.

Tanks will likely use coilguns. While they don't have the same firepower, they don't toast the projectile when firing and use less power to use effectively. Also the wear is comparable to a modern tank cannon.

Nice!
Also means they could use specialised ammunition. *hintnudgepokewithaflechetteshell*

That's what I mean, we are so used to our world's tech progression that we really can't think of how certain tech path could have taken... a different path.

Not neccesarily. A cyclotron isn't a terribly expensive piece of equipment these days, starting at I think 2 million or so.

But how the hell the Harrier will carry its power pack?

Reply Good karma Bad karma+2 votes

The Pegasus II engine powers a generator which in turn loads supercapacitors, which power the cannon.

Reply Good karma Bad karma+2 votes

And what's the rate of fire/burst capacity?
A single shot air weapon, as powerful as it sounds, doesn't sound all that useful in the era of guided missiles.

That has to be determined through ballance testing.

But you do have to have a rough idea of how firing the thing will look like, right?
Just asking if we're to expect a nose mounted cannon similar to what you'd have seen mounted through the prop in WWII or something that goes..."DAKKA!"

Real life is boring ,also we have to have some sort of difference between the style of the factions ,a plasma gun is a good addition on that matter .

Description

FX.3A Sea Harrier

The Harrier was intended to be replaced by the newer F-35, however with endless delays, budgets overruns and 10 new problems for every solved one, the UK decided to abandon the program, and instead refit the existing Sea Harriers to the FX.3A version each at the fraction of the cost of a Lightning II.

The FX.3A variant features of a cyclotron plasma beam cannon, omnidirectional LIDAR sensors and a CAPTOR-X AESA radar. It's powered by a Rolls-Royce Pegasus II engine, which is essentially a Pegasus engine rebuilt with the latest materials. Additionally, the hull has a radar signature reducing shape.

The result is one of the most advanced strike fighter in the world.
