Red Alert: A Path Beyond is an exciting, free first person shooter based on Westwood's classic real time strategy, Command & Conquer: Red Alert. Control the characters, infantry, and vehicles from the classic and its expansions Counterstrike and The Aftermath in a unique flavor of base-oriented combat.

RA:APB has been featured by Game Informer, PC Gamer, Games for Windows, Let's Play, PC Zone (UK), eGames (GER), and has appeared on Electronic Art's very own CommandAndConquer.com; not to mention having a showing at the Leipzig Games Convention in 2006 and another shout-out segment in Battlecast Primetime. Recently, we were also listed in 1up.com's best free games of 2008... on top of being ModDB's 2nd Place Indie Game of the Year 2007.

Video and images appearing on this page are actual in-game footage taken during live gameplay.

The War

It's 1946. Mankind has just gone through one of the most brutal wars it ever faced. While the rest of the world is still in shock and trying to find ways to prevent such an event from ever taking place again, a Jewish/German scientist of unmatched genius by the name of Albert Einstein, decides to act. With a device he was engineering for the US government (at a secret research center in Trinity, New Mexico-- the same site where he helped develop the most devastating weapons mankind has come to know), he travels back into time to kill the person who he sees as the root of all misery; Adolf Hitler. He catches up with Hitler in 1926, as Hitler is still a young - but already embittered - man and 'disposes' of him; without thinking through the consequences thoroughly enough, as time will soon tell.

Mammoth in Snow Heavy Tank versus Ore Truck

It's now the 1950s. World War II never happened; at least, not yet. Germany remains a peace-loving country with close ties to other European nations, now finding themselves facing increasing tensions with Russia under Josef Stalin's lead... and all the while the Soviet Union grows in influence and military might. Attempting to live up to a glorious Marxist dream he has envisioned, Stalin mobilizes the forces of the USSR. His goal? The Soviet Union stretching from coast to coast after an epic communist revolution, with Russia reigning supreme. The nations of England, France, Germany, Greece, Turkey and many more form the Alliance that seeks to put an end to this madman's nightmare before he can see to its completion. The Great World War II has begun.

The Sides

Players, joining the game at anytime during the gameplay, will usually be signing up to fight for either the Allied or Soviet forces. Currently in planning are also competitive-cooperative missions and unorthodox levels based around a specific set of RA:CS missions some of you may remember...

The Soviets rely on no-brainer brute force tactics, with the heaviest and hardest-hitting units on the battlefield. With an emphasis on putting as much fire on-target as possible, as quickly as possible, the Soviet arsenal includes many weapons with large areas of effect, and all their tanks include twinned barrels. While their navy is not neccessarily impressive, they can field massive squadrons of Hind helicopters.

Tesla Tank HIND

The Allies require a bit more finesse to play. Taking advantage of the Soviet's slow advance with long ranged weaponry and agile combat units are only part of the plan. An array of uniquely-abled units like the Thief, Spy, and Mobile Gap Generator are able to play an important support role, and the Allies feature important field-repair infantry. Precise and powerful hits are key features of the combat-oriented units.

The Units

Command almost the entire roster of vehicles and infantry from Red Alert and its expansions, with new flair. Discover new unit combinations to make defeating your enemies a breeze. There is a near-complete roster of both combat and support vehicles for land, sea, and air, including:

  • Light, Medium, Heavy, and Mammoth main battle tanks

  • Tesla escort/support tanks

  • Mobilized 155mm Artillery and V2 Launcher long-range bombardment

  • AP/AV Minelayers to secure your perimeter

  • Ore Trucks, for a different kind of mining altogether

  • Basic infantry are complimented by shotgun and lmg toting officers

  • C4-weilding Tanya and mechanical menace Volkov

  • Gunboats, Destroyers, Subs, and Missile Subs

  • Demolition Trucks and MAD Tanks for wholesale destruction - at a price

  • Longbow, Hind, and Chinook helicopters

  • APCs and Naval Transports to ferry your soldiers

  • Snipers for the FPS fans out there, but trickier than you'd expect

  • Spies and Thieves to subtly (or overtly) harass the enemy

  • Engineers, Technicians, Medics, and Mechanics

  • Rocket Soldiers and Flamethrowers hit the other side where it hurts

The Outcome

Needless to say, we've been at this for a while to get to version Beta 1.2.0, and the unit balance is in constant revision. The map list is always being expanded, with over 20 primary maps for play, with an assortment of fan maps available for checking out. There is a game running nearly 24/7, and detailed statistical tracking is available with forum sig integration. We are dedicated to the constant revision and enhancement of this game, and have worked hard to make it what it now is, after a year-long break a while back. We'll try to provide a hosting package as soon as possible.

We hope you like what we have to offer, and look forward to your constructive feedback at our forums at www.apathbeyond.com. It's a blast to play.

With college graduations and vacation plans kicking off, we've been a little bit quiet. Here's what's going on:

Vehicle Remodeling

A lot of the older models in the game were made by people who aren't with us anymore, and were made far before the introduction of shader technology and before our decision to increase polygon counts. While we've retro-fitted a few of them (removing the stop-sign wheels on the Ranger for actual round ones, and slapping on some quick normal maps to older tanks) in recent times, they also never had proper camo schemes made for them. Time to fix that.

The Soviet Missile Sub and Soviet Attack Sub have both had their models redone, first of all.

Click them to view the larger image. The Allied Cruiser is also being made finally, although we're not yet ready to say how it will be used. The design for that is being based off a variety of source material, the result of a hot forum topic we had.

The Soviet Heavy Tank is also currently being worked on as the older model had a few problems to it, and it was ready for a face-lift and retexturing. A lot of subtle detailing, such as grooves on its armor plating, bolts, and the roundedness of certain parts will be handled through bump mapping. And of course, it will get the four-camo treatment that all of the new ground vehicles are getting. Here's a quick look at the model itself plunked into the game:

Now, our previous vehicle modeler had to retire due to some family trouble. All of these new ones are actually being made by testers; the ones pictured were done by Kane000, and the Allied naval units are being done by M1Garand8. For his work, Kane000 is being promoted to staff, and he'll be tackling the Light Tank next. R34ch, another tester, is also going to join us as staff for his work on his map Coastal Influence, and to give support/updates to the older maps (such as Fissure, which is getting a bit of an overhaul) while other staff focus on brand new ones instead.

Balance Tracking Data Public!

Periodically we like to flaunt our balance statistics around. The overall balance is superb, and the per-map data is pretty awesome. All of it supports the observations we've made about various maps; now you can check to see if your feelings about a particular map are true. For example, you might notice in a packed game that Fjord plays a lot differently than when it's only 9v9; you're now able to go in and search for Fjord rounds under 20 players and see the stats for yourself!

Some new data regarding round time is not available for all rounds in our database, only newer records are searchable based on round time. However, every other filter works for the past 16,000+ full rounds of A Path Beyond that've been played on the official server since December. The data is pre-filtered to remove any rounds where the server crashed, as forced to the next map, or auto-advanced due to no players willing to join on a particular map, so we've taken out that noise for you.

Here's a quick preview of the kind of output you'd see, along with a full listing of each round under that. If you want to take a look, go to Apb.mp-gaming.com and take a look.

New EVA Voices

During combat, your EVA relays audio announcements to you when you need them most. We've mostly been using the original Red Alert announcements and some edits, but that's really been limiting us. Instead, we're putting our voice talent to work and creating a full new set of voice clips. All of the original audio is being replaced, and new clips to provide better feedback and situational awareness are being made. For example, you'll get notification that a Spy has successfully infiltrated his target and disabled the Soviet Atomic Bomb while it sits in its silo.

BattleLaf is handling all of the main recording, with TagDaze as the chief audio engineer responsible for the edits. We're going roughly for a similar sound and feel to the original EVA voiced by Martin Alper over a decade ago, but we're also doing some things a little bit differently. Team-wide EVA announcements also will replace the existing silent "radio command" quick chat messages with far more useful alerts. Our entire staff is doing individual voicing for specific infantrymen for verbal shouts you can make for nearby soldiers to hear, rendering the old "radio commands" unneccessary anyways!

There are a ton of new announcements, and every vehicle purchase is now announced to the team so you can tell what people are actively building even when you're out in the field. It's harder than you'd think to get the right metallic sound to this stuff, but we've figured it out most of the way. Click the play button to listen; these are not final but should give you an idea of what we're going for even if there are some slight inconsistencies.

APB can run on Vista 32 and 64 bit. (Although you might need to make some changes to start it on 64 bit, this might be what you are experiencing right now)

Try asking for more information on our forums.

Edit: For some reason I can't reply to the post below me.

Great, Great mod, you've out done yourselves to bring us a fully realised version of everybodies favourite alternate history scenario C&C:Red Alert :). I really enjoy playing it, most of the time this can be all i play for weeks. Some how though I had only come across a gap generator fot the first time yesterday. I was just wondering, the way that the gap generator creates a huge dark bubble which the enemy cannot see past. Does the Gap Truck - vehicle thing do the same? Will it shrowd you and your allies in a bubble of darkness? or does it simple turn you invisible?
