Are you ready for the next evolution of multiplayer sandbox games?

Realm Explorer will be a computer game about creation in the fantasy universe of Gnostaria; your creations. In perhaps the most dynamic sandbox world yet to be conceived you will be able to dig the soil and mine ore, precious metals and gems all in a beautiful and dynamic 3D world. The terrain will shape and form to your actions. Drive a shovel into the ground and watch the earth give way. Heave your pickaxe into a cave wall and see the stone disintegrate before you; revealing the treasure beneath. Go on adventures alone or with friends via internet multiplayer and craft weapons, armor, tools and other items. How you play is up to you. The possibilities are limitless.

A new Realm rises from the Sand

At its core we didn't want Realm Explorer to be just another "sandbox" - we wanted it to be a true sandbox RPG. Character customization and development are just as important to the game design as being able to mine and dig. To start you will be able to completely customize your character's appearance. From hair and skin color for both male and female characters to facial hair and other details you can make a character that looks the part. With so many options for customization your character can truly be unique.

A New Type of World

We've also gone to great lengths in creating a world in which nearly everything you wear can be visually represented on your character. Backpacks and belt pouches don't just sit as icons in your inventory; your character wears them for everyone to see. Each piece of armor or clothing is also visually represented and individual pieces can be mixed and matched for utility or style; it's entirely up to you. If you're wearing a chainmail shirt and cloth pants you will see the different pieces visually in the game. You can even go so far as to wear a different boot on each foot or a different glove on each hand.

In most games you can only use your imagination to envision what your character might look like with all of his different equipment; in Realm Explorer it's a lot more fun to actually see it with your own eyes.

Don't just mine and craft; experience a rich fantasy roleplaying game

What would an RPG be without character advancement? Not only can you dig for resources like iron and gold or diamonds and rubies and then craft items from them; your character will also gain skills as he performs different actions. The more you play the more powerful your character will become. This will allow him to create better and more interesting items or fight more powerful monsters. Your ability to craft different items is based not only on what resources you have collected but also how far you've advanced your character's skills. Keep mining, digging, building, crafting and fighting and your character will continue to grow as you play.

You're going to need a lot of shovels and buckets for this one...

Now, before the hardcore sandbox fans get too concerned we've already got you in mind as well. You will be able to completely configure the game to your desired play style. If you simply want to mine, dig, collect resources, craft items and build structures you'll be able to do so. You can configure your realm to exclude various RPG elements, including hostile enemies, skill gain and even death and damage if you so desire. Realm Explorer is designed with features that go above and beyond the basics of what we normally think of in a sandbox game but you'll be able to enjoy the beautiful visuals without the risk that adventure elements bring if you so choose.

Realm Explorer blends Fantasy RPG elements with a Sandbox World

  • Generate unlimited unique worlds. Explore vast and interesting procedurally generated sandbox worlds set in the fantasy universe of Gnostaria.
  • Play online with friends via internet multiplayer or enjoy a single player world.
  • Built in server browser. Find other games or host your own.
  • Persistent game worlds. Play now and come back to the same world later, just as you left it. Multiplayer games can be hosted indefinitely online for public or private worlds.
  • Shape the terrain. Dig anywhere using shovels and pickaxes. Mine resources from natural caves, raise or demolish hills and mountains or construct tunnels.
  • Cut down trees to clear land and collect lumber.
  • Craft and create any item in the game. There are hundreds of weapons, armor, clothing and more. If it's in the game you can make it. Use the resources you gather to make new and better items.
  • Unique crafting system. Use a combination of "hand tools" (e.g. hammers, scissors, saws) in your inventory and "craft stations" (e.g. forges, anvils, looms, tanning racks) to construct different items.
  • Complete character customization. Change facial features, hair style, facial hair, skin color and more. Choose between either male or female characters.
  • See what you wear. Armor and clothing are visually represented on your game character on a piece-by-piece basis. Mix and match armor and clothing pieces for utility or style. You can wear a different boot on each foot or a different glove on each hand. Your character will look like what you are wearing.
  • Visible backpacks and belt pouches. Additional inventory-extending containers like backpacks, rucksacks, belt pouches and belt packs can be worn and are visually represented on your character.
  • Expand your inventory slots. Different types of containers will give you more usable inventory space.
  • RPG elements including character skills and character development. The more you perform actions the more your skills related to those actions increase. For a pure sandbox experience players can turn off skills and focus entirely on gathering resources and building.
  • Drop items. Pick them up later. Items you drop on the ground appear and can be seen or taken by other players (or NPCs).
  • Physics. Realm Explorer makes use of a physics engine for various gameplay elements.
  • Future game modes including multiplayer co-operative "Defense" mode, where players work together to hold off waves of incoming enemies, are planned.
  • Smash and destroy almost any item in the game.
  • Real-time action-oriented combat mechanics. One click = one swing.
  • Battle fierce enemies. From the common wolf or the mundane rat to incredible golems and horrifying undead.
  • Jump between offensive and defensive stances to block and parry attacks. Perform defensive maneuvers like kicks and shield bashes.
  • Wield hundreds of different weapons and use different weapon styles; swords, axes, maces, hammers, spears, javelins, bows, crossbows, daggers, knives, one handed weapons and giant two-handed weapons. If one weapon isn't enough why not use two? Dual wield any two one-handed weapons for double the fun.
  • Find and collect rare items and artifacts.
  • Interact with friendly and hostile NPCs.
  • Participate in dynamically generated quests.
  • Experience a breathtaking dynamic weather system and dynamic day and night system.
  • Enjoy a brief, optional story campaign "Gnostaria: Golem Wars" and take part in the exciting story of golem-kind throughout the realm. Can a golem really have a heart of gold?
  • And much more!

Greetings Realm Explorers!

It's been a few weeks since our last massive game patch -- the BIOME Patch -- and a lot more new development has been under way in that time. The dynamically generated realms of the game are starting to become more alive with each passing week. It seems rather appropriate that as the summer months approach that things are really starting to heat up with Realm Explorer.

We've been hard at work on the next big updates for Realm Explorer but we've always got our ear to the community. You guys asked and we listened! Aside from wanting more feature and content patches the number one requested item from the community has been more development updates! We're pleased to announce that starting next week we will be launching a new initiative to post both development news AND videos TWICE A WEEK. We plan to post blog posts detailing everything from the latest feature developments, news from upcoming patches, details of art creation, general game design issues and more. Videos will review features and content from recent patches as well as upcoming content for yet-to-be-released patches.

We have a lot of exciting new stuff that is ready or almost ready for the next few updates that we'll be revealing in the coming weeks. Completely new UI, character customization, major performance improvements and bug fixes, enhancements to crafting, combat, NPCs and a lot more are all in the works.

To conclude this brief announcement we're pleased to share a sneak peek at the completely revamped main menu. We're hard at work completing this new menu and all of the related features -- brand new 3D character customization and character selection feature, key binding, game options and much more. The main menu is the first thing you see when you play a game and we want to have something that looks good and is easy to use.

Please enjoy these screenshots from the concept phase through the first draft of implementation in the game. We're still working on it but we think it's coming along nicely!

Looks good,
what about a Linux version? Unity permits that!

Hi Giamme,
We would like to support Linux and Mac in the future. We will most likely start exploring these possibilities around a beta release timeframe. We presently don't have any hardware setup to test either of these platforms but supporting Mac and Linux are definitely goals for the future.

Is the game working? Because I tried joining a multiplayer and it just wouldn't work, and tried single player and it just won't pass from the "Loading realm" window.

Hi Mikael1987,
There have been a few players who have had problems running the game however there have been several thousand more who have been able to play without a problem.

Some of the top reasons why Realm Explorer doesn't work are as follows:
1. Computer hardware isn't powerful enough to run the game. Right now we recommend a quadcore CPU, 4GB of RAM and DirectX 9 or better video card from the past 6 years or so. We're working all the time to reduce these requirements. Also keep in mind that single player requires a much more powerful computer than multiplayer.

2. Not having .NET 4.5 installed when trying to run the Single Player. If you wish to play Multiplayer only then you don't need to have .NET 4.5 installed at all. If you try to run Single player the game will determine whether you have it installed or not and if not it will help you to download and install it. Please note that .NET 4.5 is only available from Microsoft for Windows Vista or higher (this is because Microsoft officially will stop supporting Windows XP as of this year).

3. A very slow hard drive. In some cases people who have very very slow hard drives have problems loading the game.

4. Unreliable internet connections. Right now all of the publicly listed servers that I'm aware of are hosted in North America. There have been some issues especially with users from outside of North America connecting to these servers. We have tracked several of these down to international internet routing issues and even worked with ISPs a few times to resolve them. This is generally out of our control. Anyone can download the stand alone server software from RealmSource.com and host a stand alone server for free.

If none of these issues help to address your problem please contact us at support@realmsource.com with your computer specs and RealmSource.NET account name and we will be able to help you further.

I'm about to get a copy of this promising title, one question I have two questions: are there any combat in the current state of the game?

Cheers!

Hi Crisdmc,
Combat isn't presently in the game but it will be the focus of our next major release. We will be doing some other feature / content releases before then but after that the main focus will be on combat (followed by NPCs).

You can see our current development plan here: Realmsource.com

Enjoy!

Excellent, thank you! looking forward to this title, you're doing awesome guys! one thing I'd like to recommend about looting is the fact that supposedly you'll take everything an enemy was carrying, so if you loot an skeleton his armor should be in bad shape (rust, missing parts and such) and obviously this armor should not grant as much protection as a new one, but here is the good thing, you should be able to repair it! and to add balance, a repaired armor from a looted corpse should no grant as much protection as a brand new one :) I don't know if you have already tought of this, just wanted to throw my humble opinion and help to improve more and more this awesome promising title.

Cheers!

I just started the game for the first time, and tried creating a new single player realm. After entering the name and the seed, I get thrown back to my desktop, but the game is still running. When I select the game and get back into it, I'm back at the realm selection, and the realm I tried creating is not in the list.

Not sure what, if anything, I'm doing wrong, but it seems I can get no further.

Running on Win7 64-bit, Core i7 CPU, 8 GB RAM, ATI 5870 GPU

Ever since the first footage of this game got released, I've thought that it had great potential. Now that I have gotten my hands on the Alpha, I am sure about this. If I look at it correctly, I can tell that in the realm explorer as how it's planned to be in the future, you can do whatever you please to do whenever you want to do it. If we look at future plans, we can tell that server administrators have endless possibilities to shape their realm. Settings will allow you to create your ideal realm…

I don't know what to say... Based on the screenshots and video i was expecting a playable game and not some kind of minecraft-like square shaped world without npcs, objects, anything much to do. Long way ahead before this becomes anything close to a game... I agree that this can be anything at this point.
