Rage through 32 single player levels and 6 deathmatch levels of sheer terror and fully immersive sound and lighting. Arm yourself against the cannibalistic Ogre, fiendish Vore and indestructible Schambler using lethal nails, fierce Thunderbolts and abominable Rocket and Grenade Launchers.
Quake 1 (one) is noted for three distinctions:
1. the first true 3D map enabled shooter. All previous fps (and other types of games) were 2.5D or less (even with trickery).
2. introducing hardware acceleration (glQuake) via 3dfx chipset video cards.
3, built in networking easily used over any type of TCP/IP network. (Previous to this, setting up a multiplayer game could be an exercise of great pains and frustrations...)
These three items are enough to make quake one of the greatest games of all times. Certainly the greatest follow up to the original Doom release.
There are those that criticize the story line and strength of game play in single player. It is likely they are just hating. After all quake is also eminently moddable and these things can (and have to some extent) be fixed.
