To celebrate Quake's 20th birthday, the developer behind Wolfenstein: The New Order decided to do something special.
MachineGames honored the classic game's legacy with a new single-player add-on called, "Episode 5: Dimension of the Past," which delivers new Quake story levels along with a multiplayer map. The developer announced the addition in a tweet containing a direct download link (below).

Installing the add-on is an easy process, laid out in the readme file included with the level pack. You find the folder where Quake is installed, create a new "dopa" directory and copy over all the files from the level pack. Then, you simply run the included "dopa.bat" and start playing.
id Software released Quake in 1996, hot off the success of Doom (1993) and Wolfenstein 3D (1992). While those earlier first-person shooters helped define the genre at the time, Quake pushed it further with true 3D-rendered environments and refinements to online play.
There hasn't been a new story add-on released for Quake since 1997, when a pair of mission packs — "Scourge of Armagon" and "Dissolution of Eternity" — were put out in a two-month period. The game's seen multiple sequels over the years, but "Dimension of the Past" was made specifically for the original.
MachineGames is part of the same Bethesda Softworks publishing family that owns id Software. In 2014, the Sweden-based studio debuted Wolfenstein: The New Order, a sharp series revival that paired the original game's fast, twitchy action with an engrossing story.
There's more to come for Quake, as well. Bethesda announced Quake Champions at E3 with a cinematic trailer. The PC-only shooter is a competitive online game that is expected to borrow the original's fast pace while amping things up with a roster of "hero" characters, similar to Blizzard's Overwatch.
Expect more Quake Champions details later this summer when Bethesda hosts its annual QuakeCon fan convention in August. For now, you can tide yourself over with "Dimension of the Past," provided you own a working copy of Quake, which is available from both Steam and GOG.
