Quake Remake v1.0 (SFX-archive)
Sep 17, 2012 Full Version 2 commentsIt's a self-extracting RAR-archive with final version of "Quake Remake". Now it's a full game, with all the levels, monsters and backgroung soundtrack...
Hi guys!
We are glad to introduce you a remake of the legendary game "Quake" by id Software. Quake Remake has been recreated by a team of Quake fans led by main Xash3D Engine developer, Uncle Mike. It's not that kind of ambitious projects like Darkplaces etc, it's more like project of porting a game to a different engine, just for fun and interests of modding community. Quake Remake not only allows you to play a great game using new Xash3D engine, but also to create a Quake-styled mods (and even games) using GoldSource and XashXT tools, map model and texture formats, new gameplay posibilities, unsupported by original Quake.
Here is a list of GoldSource features you can see in Quake Remake already:
- skeletal animation
- sprite muzzleflashes
- blood decals
- transparent water
- screen shake during explosions
- MP3 music
- Quake Remake is based on Xash3D engine.
It allows you to use HD models and textures, so existing model and texture packs for Quake could be adapted for Quake Remake. Xash3D engine also gives you a posibility to implement new renders into the game, and even to use third-party physics engines.
- Quake Remake is open-source, so feel free to experiment!
If you wish, just download the devkit.
- Quake Remake contains full Quake storyline.
Four episodes, epic ending, three difficulty settings, original monsters, bosses, weapons, items and secret places.
Multiplayer is also avaliable.
- as a Xash3D engine game, Quake Remake supports recording and playing of gameplay demos. Use console command "record demo_name", or just "record" to start recording, "stop" to finish and "playdemo demo_name" to view recorded demo.
- specially for Quake Remake we implemented into Xash3D some Quake-specific features like luma textures and Quake map format, so it's very close to it's old famous origin.
We hope you enjoy it!
P. S. If you're interested in HD content for Quake Remake, check a Mods section. There is already a project of porting some of existing fan works from Quake to Quake Remake-compatible format.
It's a self-extracting RAR-archive with final version of "Quake Remake". Now it's a full game, with all the levels, monsters and backgroung soundtrack...
It's a developers' kit for "Quake Remake". If you want to create your own game or modification, based on "Quake Remake", it will be useful for you. There...

I'd like to start off by saying that I love projects like this. A Quake 1 (port in this case) to a more up-to-date engine is good stuff IMO. OpenMW, Gemrb, Stargus/Wargus, etc are all reimplementations from scratch of various games/engines that I watch the development of. None of them distribute any content at all (and for good reason.)
With that in mind, it's illegal (at least in the US and most countries) to distribute the Quake 1 content created by id software (even if you changed them.) Basically id software still owns the copyright to that content. The legal way to distribute this would be to provide the tools to convert the original files to the new format to work with the Xash engine. This requires the person downloading this to have bought the original content from id.
Basically I'd say you should immediately take down the current "Quake Remake v1.0 (SFX-archive)" download and then take some time to do what I mentioned above. I'll give you a week to at least take down the download. if it's still up on January 22nd, I'll be sending off information to Mod DB & id software about the copyright infringement.
1. Most part of content of Quake is already presented in Quake Demo, which is often distributed freely even by Quake modmakers as a part of their mods.
2. All Quake levels and models were released by id Software as open source content, as the Quake engine.
3. Quake Remake is non-profit fan project. Developers of Quake Remake are not pretending for owning of any copyrighted materials.
4. Almost all parts of Quake Remake are not compatible with original Quake, so you can't use a Quake Remake content to get a fully working Quake game from Quake Demo, for example.
5. Quake Remake is not providing totally same game experience, as original Quake.
6. If you want to get original Quake game, you still need to buy it.

1. Not even remotely correct. Mods don't distribute the content that's already part of Quake because of how Quake paks are read by the engine. So they're only distributing their work to overwrite what's provided by Quake.
2. Again, completely wrong. They released the engine source as GPL only. They retained the rights to all content (demo & full version.)
"All of the Quake data files remain copyrighted and licensed under the original terms, so you cannot redistribute data from the original game, but if you do a true total conversion, you can create a standalone game based on this code." from ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/source/q1source.txt
3. Yes, and there are many such projects which do this correctly. They cannot distribute copyrighted material (it's a derivative work what was done here which means they'd need permission from id to distribute it.)
4&5. Doesn't matter for the discussion at hand. The textures, sounds, etc are still copyright id. Making modifications & distributing them isn't allowed.
6. Exactly. Distributing the copyrighted material from the original is the issue.
I explained quite clearly that what they're currently doing is breaking copyright law in the US (which is where ModDB & their forums homepage is locked, making both liable for takedown notices.) What they must do, if they're to avoid any legal issues is create a tool to change anything that needs changed in the pak files and repack them to be used with the new engine. This then must be run by every user who downloads the project.
please stfu
Who are you, a lawyer?
a rat, i guess
I need a good reason to play this stuff instead of original Quake since I see:
- no console in game
- no way to enable/disable autorun
- no way to set a command to center view
- ripped resources (stolen of course) that look awful in this engine
This is not a remake, but an unofficial (and illegal) version of Quake with stolen resources and worst content.
Man, it`s just another port. Or you will blame all ports of Quake in their illegality? This game is good, but tremendously old, and flowing around web for years. Moreover the engine of this game was gone opensource long time ago.
Xash port, as you can notice, have one big difference from other ports. The models (especially monsters here) have SKELETAL animation. The models in port itself are just basic port from vertex to skeletal. Other modders can remake this models to modern standarts without limitations of quake mdl format.
Another thing about engine is that so this engine can be modifyed with PhysX, and some fancy graphic effects just like in darkplaces. And the map format here is a little more advanced than original quake format. It allows mappers to create big and detailed maps, with models, proper coloisation and physics. All this features are already implemented in XashXT mod. All of this features are opensource, and you can add, or delete some and recompile the engine and game binaries.
> This game is good, but tremendously old, and flowing around web for years.
Doesn't matter. It's still pirating to download the original Quake 1.
> Moreover the engine of this game was gone opensource long time ago.
Distributing the content (which Quake Remake does) is a copyright violation. The id GPL Quake 1 engine is completely separate from the content. Granting rights to view, edit, and distribute source modifications to the engine doesn't give the rights to distribute (changed or not) the game content. Hope that cleared up why this would (currently) be considered illegal.
I'm hoping the dev's fix this situation so they don't get taken down or legal action taken against them in any way.
Well, now I've got good reasons, but not now, but in the future, when more features will be added
