I've been running a 32bit version of ubuntu 11.10 and I decided to download the postal 2 demo, first the sound didn't work but a helpful comment sorted that out, then the mouse didn't work. So after a while I decided that maybe the proper release would work better and get paid more attention.
Unfortunately, the game won't render it starts up and the sound is fine but then the menu options don't display and all the items that spin around in the menu are grey boxes.

Thanks for reporting the problem. Although sadly right now I have no idea how to help this issue, I hope we can work it out. I'm gonna boot Ubuntu 11.10 (probably 32-bit too) in the next few days so we can see if I get the same thing, and go from there.

I have exactly the same problem, but i found out that when i run postal2 from the System directory everything works fine except for the sound.(probably because of pulseaudio). btw i run ubuntu 12.04 amd64.

Fixed it by removing:
these lines from the postal2 file:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=.:${POSTAL2_DATA_PATH}:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH

I think the problem here is more specifically related to something disscussed in another thread. Try removing the libgcc_s.so.1 libary that was included with the game. You can find it in your Desura directory by going through desura/common/postal-2/postal2game/System. That may fix all your problems.

I am beginning to think that library should just be removed from the binaries in general. I mean, it is not unreasonable to assume that all Linux users have a copy of libgcc installed, and by shipping a statically linked one they seem to be causing problems with the the two different library versions grinding against each other. I am no expert, but maybe this is something that should be brought up with Ryan Gordon?
