Pioneers will be a turn-based game with RPG elements. It's a game where you start by assembling your exploration party with men with different abilities and skills. Every man counts and every skill counts. You need someone who's good with weapons and hunting, someone who is good with carpentry, someone who can draw maps, someone who could easily learn native languages and so on. Once that's done, you put them on a ship and head for some unknown land.

Greetings, fellow adventurers.

I'm very happy to announce that a new build is now available. It fixes several issues found in the last version but also introduces a lot of new content and gameplay features. For example along with a simple introduction to the story there is now a basic tutorial mode introducing the core gameplay mechanics.

Here are the download pages (or direct download links, if you prefer):
Windows (Direct link)
Mac (Direct link)

What else has been added? In more technical aspects terrain now has height, which has its advantages and disadvantages. Higher ground offers greater range of visibility but isn't always the easiest to reach and ofen blocks your way. Quest system has also been rewritten in Lua, eventually allowing you to make your own quests.

In graphics and audio department the campsite and brig now have their own screens. Two new headbobbing tunes have also found their way into the game. That is nearly 30 minutes of original soundtrack now!

Please try it out and let me know what you think. Your feedback will help shape this game. If you like what you see and hear, visit the game's website to see how you can show your support.

Thanks for reading.

One thing: It lags. A lot. What are the requeriments? Tried to play it a few times but it just lags. I can play TF2, Metro 2033, Loadout... but not this game? I guess Ill have to wait for further updates...

Try focusing and refocusing the game window a couple of times. I think the framework I'm using has a prblem in there. Looking into it.

Wow the art is amazing. Are you using a four color palette?

Thank you both :)

Yeah, I'm limiting myself to just four colors as I feel this creates a rather unique look and is a blast to work with. There are actually four four-color palettes, one for each season.

It should be available in a few days. I'm not doing the Linux version myself so I'm not fully aware of the details. Major distributions should be supported (Ubuntu, Debian, Mint), uncertain about Fedora/Redhat right now.

BTW, one humble suggestion: can you add Linux to the supported platforms on the game page, it seems to be missing.

I went ahead and added that. I just thought I'd wait until there's actually something downloadable.

I DL this game today on a whim, and was still playing 2.5 hours later. I have to admit the spirit of a survival/rpg/exploring game really jives with my current desires from the gaming INDYstry.

I was happy with the character customization, except the lack of being able to personalize my name. Suggestions are nice though please don't lose them. The intro is solid, however the tutorial was a little bunk, I broke my ax and had to start it over by dying of thirst. Maybe just a little extra love to that axe, separate item class with no chance of breaking would be handy. After these tribulations I was off to town.

Town is nice, handy atmosphere and easy to understand, well designed sir! Shortly I was off on my first (Only?) quest to get some spice from the neighboring island. Sailing was fun, at first. Then it got mind-numbingly repetitive. Its a good system but I think something to break up the monotony, or maybe a fast travel system via the map to explored towns would be in order. I spent over a half an hour after my first quest sailing to find another town before realizing one probably has yet to be implemented, it really didn't entertain me though.

Combat is a little confusing. I kept wanting to switch between comrades to shoot, and suddenly the bear is attacking my first guy. NOT COOL BEAR! So I stuck to one on one combat until I couldn't move with the first guy, then switched to the second. I think maybe the tutorial should include a combat section to alleviate this concern.

My overall verdict is this game has GREAT BONES and I'm definitely tracking it for the future. Keep at it EigenLenk. You're doing a great job!

Thank you very much for this lengthy feedback. It has been really useful. I'm glad you like it and you played it for so long even though there's really no content just yet. But it's coming.

I agree, being able to name your characters is a must-add functionality. The sailing mechanic could use something to spice it up, true. Not sure about completely automating it though. I'll think about it. There will be a couple of towns and travel between those will take place automatically as long as there's a ship heading that way you could aboard. Sailing into the unknown can't work like that I think.

I have been struggling with the combat system and I agree, it's not the greatest yet but with some extra effort it could be pretty fun. I'll definitely incorporate it into the tutorial at some point.

There's little point sailing very far because the rest of the world has not been generated yet. I'm working on the algorithm right now actually.

Thanks again for the comment and hopefully some of these issues are no longer in the next build :)

Take care!
