OreSome is a 2D strategy game about ore -- exploring space for it, fighting aliens for it, blowing up planets with it. Build a network of frames and bots to defeat your enemies -- or just throw a sun at them. In a dying, decrepit universe full of foes, build up your forces and mine your way to the top of the food chain to explore further and further out into the void. By the time you're ready, you'll be powering light speed jump drives with stars, building Death Star style super weapons with black holes and in charge of the largest scale mining operation ever known to man -- all working for one of humanity's least scrupulous corporations -- and there's a lot of competition.

good morning/good day/good evening
I felt the need to add this thread because there is no current thread about balance yet.

This thread should be about the things (in Oresome) which you think are unbalanced or/and unfair. So anyone who cares, please feel free to add anything down below to help in improving this awesome game.

So yeah lets do this, I will make the first step by complaining about the Planetary engine.
I think it is just too weak in forms of thrust force, it only takes 3 booster bots (without using the afterburner) to completely stop a running planetary engine.
and it also requires way too much fuel to be considered as a usable way to move big frame structures without having to cheat in ores

It might be too early to really think about balance but sooner or later we will come back to this thread if so.

This is a good thought - could be really useful. I think you're probably right about the engine. It probably doesn't need TOO much force increase, but cheaper to run would make a lot of sense.

I have some suggestions, I know I have already said this however now we have a place to put it;

Individualised research: So when you upgrade 1 type of research (red, green etc) the other types would not increase in price, only the upgraded tree would.

More Cargo for some of the bots/frames; Some of the bots run out of there ore quite quickly when its reliant on ore, the Booster bots for example, if you could lower the usage amount or increase the cargo hold amount that would be great. or even increasing the amount the Hopper can hold.

Better Blaster Bots; When I say this I mean give the blaster bots the ability to attack enemies when they are idle so they do not have to be attached to a frame to attack, so we can use them as guards.

Less Showy Zone Frames; With this maybe have an option in the video section to allow a less colourful "Zone" frame pulse as when I was testing some of the frames out I realised that when I put all 3 of them together (AI, Build and Spawn) it was like having a rainbow on my screen. This isn't to much of a big deal but it might annoy some people.

Shorten the Range; The range for the green alien things that shoot spikes is quite long, half the time they are hitting me from off screen and pushing my ships/frames around into suns etc.

Less Spam; When I say this I mainly mean that when I start to explore past the 1, -1 etc areas I get spammed with to many alien things trying to kill me like alot of the times 5+ are spawning right in front of me, it could just be me but I have yet to find an effective way to fight them without sustaining to much damage.

Less Consumption; Maybe you could lower the consumption rate on many things bots/frames as said above there are many frames that use their ore much to fast (some of them are understandable)

Factions; adding some sort of faction system, like perhaps rival mining corporations, raiders, pirates etc that would feud with each other and maybe you can make alliances or treaty's with them, because as it stands all the ships I see out there just attack me on site. It would be very cool to see factions going to war with each other over mining sectors. to make them look different all you would have to do is create some sort of icon for each faction and plant it on there bots.

Living Universe; It would be awesome to see a sort of functioning universe, like trade convoys flying around (that you could rob/protect) maybe a sort of military/police, trading hubs with ships coming and going (aliens wouldn't spawn in these zones only npcs/bots) even if for a start it was cosmetic.

Ingame Wiki: I have found the wiki extremely helpful and detailed, maybe you could include some of the information in the way of a ingame manual or even tooltips, as this is most likely help many new players.

Well it seems I have gone off topic and said more then balancing only options but still I look forward to seeing your game evolve.

Sorry about two of those point being bold, the site would not let me unbold them =P

Because there so much there, I'm just going to say: yeah, fair bit of that is worth doing. Spam, ore quantities and the zone frames stick out as clear thing that need some addressing.

May 29 2013 Anchor

NIce, also with the wiki (Oresome.wikia.com) did you make it? becouse it needs to be updated to include the advanced Ore research trees etc.

May 29 2013 Anchor

@Lordbok
I wrote most of the research stuff on the wikia and you can add anything you want there if you have some time.
Freelancer11 still has a game to fix ! ;P so let him/her do that while we (fans) can take care of the wikia.

haha fair enough, I'm much to new to the game to add anything but I will try to help =P

-Drones should be able to automatically pull ore out of storage if they're out of fuel (unless toggled not to)
-Less animation for powered hardpoints, or put it in options. Currently this kinda lags my laptop and also distracts me. if a setting is added in graphic options, perhaps make the alternative a differently colored hardpoint (perhaps a white ring around the hardpoint?)
-Speed limiter, could be a slider off to the side that limits your maximum speed
-Faction disposition, controling how likely they are to attack you (won't apply to aliens)
-Changable settings for every universe, governing things like star density, enemy spawn frequency, enemy hp multiplier (I'd especially use this to reduce alien spawn rate and decrease sun density)
-less ore consumption to drones
-Higher builder bot ore storage (or perhaps unlimited?) or a tech that increases it
-An ingame toggleable mode where you can organize and move frames with the mouse, kinda like a mini shipyard
-Allied ships
"Busy" bases, rather than just abandoned bases. There should be little merchants and defenders near it too
-Command frame price changes(?) I had to cheat to get thinkton, and I was pretty far into the game already
-Increased builder bot build range
-Blaster and Breaker bots auto attack even when being commanded with command frame
-Frames slooooowly autorepair, or a tech to enable that
-"Special" Techs only aquired by... doing something, whether it be a mission, finding a buoy, killing a unique enemy
-Shipyards with buyable ships, as well as builder bot upgrades or entirely new builder bots

This will also be posted in the suggestions thread as it also fits there

-Drones should be able to automatically pull ore out of storage if they're out of fuel (unless toggled not to)
They will USE the ore, but not pull it currently. Not sure about this one.You would need to be able to toggle this in a natural way.

-Less animation for powered hardpoints, or put it in options. Currently this kinda lags my laptop and also distracts me. if a setting is added in graphic options, perhaps make the alternative a differently colored hardpoint (perhaps a white ring around the hardpoint?)
This is a good idea, I'll add it to the list.

-Speed limiter, could be a slider off to the side that limits your maximum speed
Possibly, but not going to be a priority in the near term

-Faction disposition, controling how likely they are to attack you (won't apply to aliens)
I've added some of the coding needed for this already, so that'll definitely go in at some point.

-Changable settings for every universe, governing things like star density, enemy spawn frequency, enemy hp multiplier (I'd especially use this to reduce alien spawn rate and decrease sun density)
See above.

-less ore consumption to drones
Any in particular you're thinking of, or generally?

-Higher builder bot ore storage (or perhaps unlimited?) or a tech that increases it
This is partly there to encourage the player to make storage frames, but I'll think about it.

-An ingame toggleable mode where you can organize and move frames with the mouse, kinda like a mini shipyard
Already in - hold left button on a frame within build range and it will pick it up.

-Command frame price changes(?) I had to cheat to get thinkton, and I was pretty far into the game already
5 Thinkon shouldn't be hard to acquire - several of the missions let you get more than that on their own, and one planet with the ore in the badlands would provide enough. too. Also, there's an unbuilt command frame in Central next to a message can that can be taken for free.

-Increased builder bot build range
It might be a touch small. Though there is a tech that doubles it too

-Blaster and Breaker bots auto attack even when being commanded with command frame
This would be nice - it just has to be balanced with not taking control away from the player

-Frames slooooowly autorepair, or a tech to enable that
A Con Zone frame will do this, though a slow auto repair might be sensible.

-"Special" Techs only aquired by... doing something, whether it be a mission, finding a buoy, killing a unique enemy
All the 'white' techs on the tree are found like this, or will be.

-Shipyards with buyable ships, as well as builder bot upgrades or entirely new builder bots
There's a few mini shops and the white techs upgrade the builder bot. There might be more of this sort of thing later, though it's not for sure.

Mostly thrust/boost bots, in terms of planetary engines

-Higher builder bot ore storage (or perhaps unlimited?) or a tech that increases it
This is partly there to encourage the player to make storage frames, but I'll think about it.
Yeah, kind of a fine line thing. I'd say if there was a way of doubling it, that would be good. Before anchors are researched, nowhere is safe

The free one got blown up >_<

-Blaster and Breaker bots auto attack even when being commanded with command frame
This would be nice - it just has to be balanced with not taking control away from the player
Same with blower bots too. It's just that I really have not much of a clue on how to operate drones with weapons, other than using one at a time and letting the rest of the ship sit and be useless

-Blaster and Breaker bots auto attack even when being commanded with command frame
This would be nice - it just has to be balanced with not taking control away from the player
The autorepair would especially be good for new adventurers who take a drifter to the knee. I had to replace my solar panels many times because they kept slowly getting beat up over time

-Shipyards with buyable ships, as well as builder bot upgrades or entirely new builder bots
There's a few mini shops and the white techs upgrade the builder bot. There might be more of this sort of thing later, though it's not for sure.
Actually what I was describing looks a lot like planning mode, so sounds good! Maybe also other little hidden shops for some goodies?

Lastly perhaps as a little tidbit, a tool that you can use to paint your frames.

Oh, and... maybe a little less animation with the buffer bots as well. The sparkles make it a little bit hard to tell one bot from another (as in which types they are) and the ability booster wave things could be a little more transparent. All in all though the issue is so small that I'll just leave it to you.

Some of these are going into the next version.
