Operation Flashpoint's gameplay varies significantly depending on the player's role, but the game is best described as a tactical shooter with significant vehicle elements and minor real-time tactics elements. OFP's gameplay is largely team oriented and the player spends much of the game with a squad of up to 11 AI controlled members, either as a member of the squad or as its leader. On-foot gameplay and the vehicle elements are blended seamlessly and the player can get into any available vehicle at any time, orders and mission conditions permitting. Whether on foot or in a vehicle the player can view the action from both first and third-person views, as well as an additional 'command view' available to squad leaders which gives the player a limited birds-eye view of the surrounding area. At the start of each mission (after the intro cinematic) the player is presented with a briefing explaining the situation, describing the player's goals in the mission and, often, providing further information in the form of notes. Once in-game the player is provided with a map, compass, watch, and a notebook (which contains the aforementioned briefing for reviewing). Depending on the mission the player may be required to participate in and complete a variety of tasks, from simply driving a truck or guarding bases to attacking or defending various objectives (whether on foot or while crewing a vehicle), patrols, reconnaissance and sabotage behind enemy lines (as a special forces soldier), air support (as a helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft pilot), or any combination of these and more.

Once the player is given command of an AI-controlled squad, they can issue their men a large variety of orders, either via a series of menus or simply by selecting the soldiers and clicking a place in the world or the map. Besides advising them how to act (e.g., don't fire and stay low), players can order their men to fire at specific targets, move to a certain location, get in or out of vehicles, watch certain directions, man fixed weapons, and even some 'special' actions such as repairing vehicles.

Operation Flashpoint 1.99 Update or ARMA Cold War Assault

10th Anniversary of Operation Flashpoint : Cold War Crisis

In-game Screens In-game Screens

As Bohemia Interactive's award winning military simulation Operation Flashpoint reached an age of 10 years, Bohemia Interactive re-branded and re-released Operation Flashpoint as ARMA Cold War Assault as a celebration for their anniversary. It can be brought from Steam or a free update provided to the original owners!

Operation Flashpoint or ARMA Cold War Assault is an award winning 2001 combat military simulator for the PC that was developed by Bohemia Interactive, and published by Codemasters. Built on the Real Virtuality engine, it was a realistic simulation that featured a single player campaign, multiplayer capabilities over LAN & Internet, and even included a mission editor. Later on in 2001, Operation Flashpoint had 2 expansion packs named Red Hammer and Resistance. It later received a port under the name Operation Flashpoint Elite on the Xbox.

By 2006, Codemasters and Bohemia Interactive split to form two different games, Bohemia Interactive released ARMA: Armed Assault in 2006, and Codemasters released Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising in 2009 (Codemasters stated that it is not promoted as an 'official sequel' to OFP).  Bohemia Interactive has gone on to create further games such ARMA 2 and soon to be released, ARMA 3. In 2011, Bohemia Interactive celebrated the 10th anniversary of Operation Flashpoint by re-branding it as ARMA Cold War Assault.

Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis was re-branded as ARMA: Cold War Assault due to Codemasters still retaining the rights of the name "Operation Flashpoint".

Complaints about .pbo errors are baseless. Just about every bug or glitch ever found in any version of OFP are found at The Avon Lady's OFP FAQ and can be fixed.

Methinks you were using a pirated copy?

People need to keep in mind that this game came out in 2000, BEFORE Battlefield 1942. Bohemia Interactive accomplished everything that they set out to do, even when Li C. Kuo played the ***** for Red Storm Entertainment (who had a long-standing reach-around relationship with PC Gamer...NOT PC Gamer UK, which rated OFP very highly) by calling into question whether B.I. could achieve their vision. Then, when B.I. made their dream a reality, Li C. Kuo proceeded to rag on OFP for the same things he praised Ghost Recon for. The guy is a bug.

OFP did it first. OFP did it best.

Give us OFP with mid-game joining and you can kiss the competition goodbye.

Definently the best large-scale FPS war game. Can be difficult and complex, but still be best all the same.

The most realistic, graphicly fine and best war sim to date.
Those of you who say: 1 shot and your down... you try taking a bullet to the leg and tell me if you could walk after.

I have loved this game since iv since it came out. It has everything a war sim needs plus extras.

A+ Game.

(And those who say it sucks... guess your gamming skills also suck.)

You guys are nuts..

no other game allows you to run around and do whatever you want... awsome game.

I'll admit the missions are boring. But the addons, mission editor, and player missions make up for it.

Incredible game.
