About

OpenRA is a highly moddable RTS game engine for classic Westwood 2D games. In fact Red Alert, Command & Conquer and Dune 2000 are implemented purely as mods on it. Tools are provided that allow you to add new units, maps and tilesets even create your own mod. Have a look at the wiki.

Built-In Mods

Red Alert

sovietsThe RA mod for OpenRA is a reimagining of Command & Conquer: Red Alert. It is not just a clone of the original but has improved and rebalanced gameplay. The UI is modernised for higher resolutions and better usabiltiy. It has fully working multiplayer support for both internet and local play (via direct connect). A single player campaign is currently being worked on.

Command & Conquer

GDI The CNC mod for OpenRA is a reimagining of the original Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn game. As with Red Alert modern networking and rendering technology is used. Also new features are implemented such as snow terrain, neutral tech buildings and many glitches from the original have been fixed.

Dune 2000

ArrakisThe D2k mod for OpenRA is a reimagining of Dune 2000. A remake of the remake so to speak. The mod tries to optimize balancing and gameplay. Currently in early stages of development, but already playable. The spice must flow!

Hot on the heels of last week’s playtest-20141012, we have just released a third and (hopefully) final playtest in preparation for our stable Halloween release next weekend.

Development over the last week has been focused on tidying up loose ends, and includes:

  • An overhauled observer/replay sidebar for the Red Alert mod.
  • An improved (and hopefully more robust) crash-detection mechanism.
  • Improved memory usage over the previous playtests.
  • Further improvements to our new Lua API, and the removal of the old API.
  • Further improvements to our packaged single-player missions.
  • Additional minor polish improvements and bug fixes.
Please take this playtest out for a spin and report any and all problems on our bug tracker!

Improved mission dialogThe observer/replay sidebar in the RA mod has been rebuilt to match the new player sidebars.

Improved mission dialogThe RA mod now includes the “Monster Tank Madness” mission. Can you evacuate Dr Demitri in time?

1) known issue, see Bugs.open-ra.org
2) yes, but not recommended, we only support uncompressed WAV and weird legacy Westwood file formats.

One question: Is it #1 technically possible and #2 intended (somewhere in the future) to use red buildings and silver units for Nod in the TD mod? That would add even more original CnC feeling.

This is technically possible, and I'd like to do it in the singleplayer campaigns. I don't think it makes much sense in skirmish/online games where players can select their own colors.
