It is an open source multiplayer first-person shooter. It uses the id Tech 3 engine source code (which is released under the GNU General Public License v2), and fills in the blank with all new media to make a playable game.

  • It's not a 'scavenge the internet for stuff' compilation project, the only things scavenged are some maps, which are OKAY because their source was released under the GPL.
  • Everything is strictly open source so they can be improved forever (and ever).
  • The additional "Missionpack" game types and weapons are merged into the base, so you get to lay the mines in overload maps.
  • There's more game types than the base game, like Domination, Last Man Standing, and what not. ("What not" does not refer to a gametype of that name - Ed)
  • Uses ioq3 for various feature additions, but it is not ioq3 dependent; it's also intended to be vanilla compatible. (The only thing that won't work is ogg music)
  • The art direction is different and not strictly 'gothic'. There's more of a eastern slant than the usual 'put skulls n' blood all over it's cool' you find in most games.
  • It's not next-gen, and computer compatibility range is wide enough to run on that dusty Pentium II in your attic.
  • There are bots, perfect for when you're stranded on an island.
  • There's also people playing it on the internet.
  • It is Free Software, so there's no guilt in downloading it and redistributing it.

OpenArena is licensed under the GNU GPL version 2 - data and engine. Anyone can contribute to it, if it complies with the GNU GPL.

WARNING: OpenArena contains Mature Content. I'm serious. If you don't like shooting the bloody guts and beating hearts out of voluptuous barely modest combatants then don't play it, or play without the mature pk3 file and use com_blood 0/cg_showGibs 0 (but be aware that pure servers may not agree with this).

After a short delay of only several month finally the 0.8.8 release of OpenArena arrived at Desura.
Go give it a glance and maybe set up a dedicated server to celebrate this memorable event ;-)

The 0.8.8 release features a new character model called Neko and a bunch of either reworked or completely new maps for offline single player or online multiplayer games.

Next time a new version is released, it will doubtlessly arrive a little earlier over here.

Reock's Reveiws!

Hey not bad, first off ITS FREE, thats always a bonus and when its free and dosnt make my computer explode, even better. For anyone who ever wanted to try Quake3 but didn't spend the money at the time, or don't want to go back and spend less money for a out of date game, this game here is perfect. You get all of the fast 'frag fest' goodness, gorey explosions and the occasional skimpy clad character model...did I mention terminator style skele robots and cat girls? Its not a graphical powerhouse, don't get me wrong there, this puppy ain't no Halo 3, but on the other hand its quite small and easy to run. Won't take most people three days to download and no need for some dual core processor powered by god and video cards that make bill gates weep.

If your looking for something to do, or something for your friends to do, this works quite well, just download it, slap in some bots (which for the record, fight dirty, dont fallow them they always have a rocket launcher stashed somewhere in that bikini.) and go to town, my only thought in hindsight is a real single player campaign (ala half-life, not player vs bots arena match.) would be nice to see, but this engine might not be suitable for that sort of thing.

1. It HAD millions of dollars worth of funding (past tense).
2. It shows that you're game isn't finshed yet. If you can make it better than Quake 3 Arena for the majority of fans, you've shown that you can improve on what you base your stuff from. It's something to aim for. That is my point.
3. Why the hell have you tried to hide Cooldude, Obs and several other skins from us? It just annoys me having to make icons for skins so I don't need to use the console to reach them.

And part of their work has been already included in OA, in the form of retexturized maps.
