Mar 11, 2013 Multiplayer Map 0 commentsThis is a copy of sRGB map but under CC BY SA license.
It is an open source multiplayer first-person shooter. It uses the id Tech 3 engine source code (which is released under the GNU General Public License v2), and fills in the blank with all new media to make a playable game.
OpenArena is licensed under the GNU GPL version 2 - data and engine. Anyone can contribute to it, if it complies with the GNU GPL.
WARNING: OpenArena contains Mature Content. I'm serious. If you don't like shooting the bloody guts and beating hearts out of voluptuous barely modest combatants then don't play it, or play without the mature pk3 file and use com_blood 0/cg_showGibs 0 (but be aware that pure servers may not agree with this).

After a short delay of only several month finally the 0.8.8 release of OpenArena arrived at Desura.
Go give it a glance and maybe set up a dedicated server to celebrate this memorable event ;-)
The 0.8.8 release features a new character model called Neko and a bunch of either reworked or completely new maps for offline single player or online multiplayer games.
Next time a new version is released, it will doubtlessly arrive a little earlier over here.

This map is a copy of legocurse but under CC BY SA license.
This map is a copy of legodeck but under CC BY SA license.
This map is based on dm-curse for UT. I made this years ago and now I'm releasing an updated version under GPLv2.
This is the deck16 map from UT1, lego texture style. It has a different layout, with many changes to the original map. This map is an update to the original...
This map is the RGB color wheel, literally. 3 weapons and 3 levels.
Highest Rated (3 agree) 10/10
I love finally see OpenArena on Desura!
It's a great game, maybe the best shooter Q3 based.
Great job devs :)

I used to play this game a lot a few years ago. Now i want to play it again, but the graphics haven't aged well at all (last time i played this was in 2005 or so). Is there a possibility that you will improve the graphics some time in the future, maybe a updated version using the, now open-source, doom 3 engine?
There need to be more games like this, nowadays everyone plays this CoD ****. But with these graphics, no wonder why nobody is playing it.
Sorry bro, we don't play this game for the graphics :P
I know this game isn't about graphics. I didn't play this game for graphics in the first place.
My point is that this game could be ported to a better engine like iD Tech 4, Xreal or the engine from OverDose with very little effort, so you get all the effects, better animation system, more detailed maps, better lighting and shadows, shaders and even easier workflow for the developers.
Moving to a more advanced engine (based on iD Tech 3) is easy and has no disadvantages at all. If you have a ****** pc that can't even run a game from 1999 (what this game basically is a replica of) then you still can turn all the effects off and it will look like quake 3.
The thing is, those "more advanced engines" will actually kill a big goal of the project - *compatibility*. I know you're referring to X-ReaL, and I think that stopped being a sole engine project and more of a CC-BY media game project of it's own as far as I recall. Many people have already requested OA to move to id Tech 4 without realizing what our goals were. It's not easy and it's not worth it.
I did experiment with renderergl2 (OpenGL 2.0 module for ioquake3 with normal maps, gloss, bump, parallax, you name it) and a lot of the stuff I rely on is regressed (namely tcMod, tcGen, deformvertices, RAVENMD4), plus I am not a fan of its not-very-backwards-compatible new shader syntax. We can't make the leap to "modern" just yet. I do want to have modern features as much as the next person who wants shiny water, but I also want to keep the scope of having a low system requirement also (and I want to go even lower than Q3 at that). It can still work out for everyone.
how come?
i can run half-life 2
but this game lags
Microsoft Direct3D OpenGL wrapper from system driver I assume
install proper video drivers from your manufacturer.

Well, my PC is going asleep now a little bit - say: my server is offline again. I myself connected from time to time but only once got a short round against another human player - who of course pawned me at once :-P
To cut a long story short - we definetly need more OA-Players around here. Maybe we could arrange something like WoPs "Padday" using the comments or maybe even doodle or something similar to arrange a certain date (and time) when to meet and frag each other online ...
Wohoo, seems like the new version is finally on desura, big thanks to those involved!
Yes, it took quite a while - next time a new version is released, we'll make sure, it arrives a little earlier ;-)
How about celebrating this (re)release by setting up some dedicated servers at the weekend? We could perhaps name them "{desura}whatever_you_like", so people know they are joining other desura players ...
What do you think?
