Olvand is a little multiplayer sandbox RPG, where the players live in self-built towns and can go on all kinds of adventures together. Imagine living with your friends in a small town in the mountains, or creating a new group of friends in a pub in the metropole you all live in. There will be several mini-games the inhabitants of a server can play together, among which will be combat based games like King of the Hill or Capture the Flag. You will be able to play against other people in your city, or as a city against another city, or as a whole server against another server. The combat works with self-built guns, in which all kinds of powers can be combined to create unique effects.

Post news Report RSS Solved bugs, two videos and the future for Olvand

This week, I talk about how I'm finishing the update I'm currently working on, and what I plan to do next.

Woseseltops the bug hunter
Hi everyone! Things are going very well these days: I have some more free time on my hands, and I spend all of it on finding AND fixing bugs. All new features I have described over the last few weeks are in and fully functioning, but there still are some corner cases which make the game crash, so trying to find and fix these (as well as existing bugs from previous versions of the game) is mostly what I'm doing right now. I had hoped to be done with that around now, but for every bug I fix I discover 2-3 new ones, so it might take a few days still. After that, as I promised, 100 new invites, and another 100 if all goes well.

More videos!
Speaking of gameplay videos, there are two more! This one is by afterlategaming. I love the enthousiastic approach:

And this one, by TonyIsTheGuy, doubles as a gameplay video and a tutorial:

I really wonder what has changed that encouraged players to make videos - I got kind of used to people offering to make videos without actually doing it - but I really like this change :).

After this update
With the current update, and the two before it, I've mainly focussed on getting the town functionality in. Since the basics of that are done, I'm going to switch focus to something completely new... but before that, I think this is a nice moment to celebrate this important new addition with a new trailer video. I've got quite a few reasons to pause development for a moment to make a new video right now:

  • The core, most basic features are now complete.
  • There are no videos which show what the game has to offer in less than five minutes.
  • There are no gameplay videos showing more recent late-(ish)-game gameplay.
  • It's been a year since Olvand went public.

So the coming blogposts won't be about creating a game, but creating a trailer. I've got no idea whether it's going to take 2 days or 2 months, but if there is one thing I've learnt about creating videos is that it always takes much longer than expected. Let's give you a little teaser already:

If you want more development, see [twitter] or [facebook]. If you want to be a tester, you can subscribe on [olvand.com].

Build your own cities? hrmm.... sounds good, will you be able to make multiple-floored buildings, then the stairs In the town hall wouldn't be useless.

Of course of course. You should see these stairs as a precursor of what's coming :). Remember this game hasn't even reached alpha stage yet.
