In a fictional world of the future the infamous super villain Dr. Lacroix schemes to seize world supremacy with his army of robots. You take the role of Nikki and try to cross those evil plans on behalf of a secret organization. Your quest will take you to various locations: from futuristic metropolises to submarine facilities, floating islands, and even as far as orbital space.

Nikki and the Robots renders homage to the classical platform games of the eighties and nineties, while at the same time realizing a unique gameplay idea. The main character Nikki refrains from using any weapons or equipment during the whole quest, and can only jump and run around the levels. However, it is possible to hack into Dr. Lacroix's various robots and to take control of them via computer terminals. The nifty use of the robots and the combination of their characteristic special abilities enable Nikki to solve puzzles, overcome obstacles, and complete the level tasks.

Lovely Alpha! Though I really hope you rethink this wall jump system since it's quite horrible. Anyway, Keep going!

Quite horrible? (O_O;) We kind of like the wall jump system...

During playtests we have observed two different reactions, though. One group immediately picks up wall jumping and pretty much likes it.

The other group can hardly figure out wall jumping at all and is rather frustrated. Usually, this happens because my wall jump explanation in the tutorial level isn't very good. Here is a better one:

"Jump towards a wall, and when you touch it, jump again by pressing CTRL. You don't have to switch directions with the arroy keys or anything, just press CTRL. In the QuickDemo-WallJump level, for example, you can jump upwards between the facing walls by pressing CTRL, CTRL, CTRL..."

So, have you just been confused how to use wall jumps with Nikki? Or do you really not like the system? If so, what exactly is it, that puts you off?

First of, sry for my bad explanation of what I meant. I actually did understand the jumping mechanics very easily, but somehow my fingers didn't want to cooperate. When I jump to a wall I naturally tend to press the opposite direction button. It's really rather a reflex then an understanding problem. Somehow it's ridiculously hard and, as you said, extremely frustrating for me to have it this way since I can't get it quite right. The walljump test lvl was the only one I simply wasn't able to beat :(
This kind of walljump was the reason I never finished the meatboy flash version, and I was glad as hell when I saw that they changed it in the commercial version. Well, that’s probably just me though...
Anyway, keep it up. I hope this helps :)

The game is shaping up really nicely. I love how you guys decided to implement tight physics while still keeping the new retro look. Can't wait to get my hands on it.

One question though, how big will the story mode be? In other words, would you consider the game worth buying if someone were to buy it purely for the story episodes? I'm asking this because I'm pretty terrible level designer, so I'm not sure if I will be spending a whole lot of time with the level editor.

The story mode will feature 12 levels with a lot of original content and many surprises. A lot of our development time is dedicated to this mode. So, we think it will be very much worth buying! ;)

Also, we are planning to set up a level server for the free and open-source part of the game, so that you can download levels created by other players. So you will be able to play a lot of community levels without actually using the level editor yourself.
