About Neuromancer

Neuromancer Based on the William Gibson Novel Neuromancer, the novel that defined Cyberpunk as a sub-genre of Science Fiction Literature and Media.

This game is still in production - release date has been recalled as the nature of the project has changed. No release date has been set.

Copyright Information

Neuromancer is the intellectual property of William Gibson and was registered in 1984 under US Copyright, the book was published by Ace books and Penguin Books in the US. A game by Interplay Interactive was released in 1989 with the same name, the team behind this remake acknowledges their right as publishers of the 1989 game IP which this remake is based on as well as MediaGenics(Activision) and Electronic Arts, in recent times however these parties have each denied any participation in the ownership of trademarks or copyrights.

Furthermore a motion picture was registered around 2003 under copyright and is still in production however under a new production company- this game remake acknowledges their rights to a film adaptation of the Novel by Williamg Gibson. This remake also acknowledges the graphic novel copyrighted by Marvel Comics in the US with the same name as well.

It has come to my attention that the Video Game's rights belong to Cabana Boy Productions however this company was bankrupted only a few years ago when it tried to fund production of the first Neuromancer film under direction of Chris Cunningham. Sadly the rights to Neuromancer the game can't be tracked down by myself at present as I'm having difficulties finding who owns them now. If you represent any party that may know who is now in possesion of these rights please do not hesistate to contact me immediately.

None of these parties listed are involved with the production of this remake. This is a purely fanbased remake which I am developing for free of charge and for no profit as a test of my skills. This remake is for educational purporses and for free distribution to the public.

I have sought permissions but have had no luck in contacting these people. If you represent one of these parties please do not hesitate to get in touch with me immediately.

I will hopefully be in touch with Seven Arts Pictures and William Gibson's Agent in the comming months to negotiate permissions as these two parties are the main concerns I have towards releasing content.

Episodic Distribution Method

The game has now been changed to Episodic distribution, I will be adding these episodes as Mods to this ModDB profile.

Neuromancer 2007 Tech Demo 1
- Requires Quicktime
Please note that Neuromancer 2007 has been discontinued because of a scope and design change. The distribution method displayed at the end of the game is redundant and being a tech demo the game fails to represent the quality of the final product in any way.

Epsiode 1: Chiba City Blues
Tech Demo 2.0 is scheduled for this episode as a demonstration of the new content and multi-platform editions of the game. No set release date has been given at this point.

Episode 2: The Shopping Expidition

Episode 3: Midnight In The Rue Jules Verne

Epsiode 4: The Straylight Run

A possible 5th Episode could be made based on the success of the inital game.

Mission Statement and Developer Obligations

The scope and mission statement of this project is as follows:

  •  To produce an acurate adaptation of Neuromancer by William Gibson that is acceptable to the fans. However please be aware due to the nature of Gibon's writing everyone will have their own vision as to how the novel should appear on the screen. I will try my best to deliver on a true adaptation to the best of my abilities.
  •  To produce a cinematic animated experience and try to avoid making it look like Ghost in the Shell or Blade Runner or even Deus Ex. Neuromancer will have its own unique fresh cyberpunk style - something that feels a bit more real.
  •  To produce a bug free video game experience
  •  To produce a game that will run on a large sample of popular platforms that support Java (but not all as in some cases it is Illegal to do so - sorry 360 owners)
  •  To release a graphic novel adaptation where I can to avoid disapointing fans
  •  To tell the story of Neuromancer in a unique way - this can involve Non-linearity and also Freeform elements. (I'd like a combo if possible)
  •  To provide a multimedia website outside of ModDB for promotion

Parental Information

Please note that Neuromancer is an adult video game. Using TIGRS this video game is rated ADULT. No one under the age of 18 should be exposed to this game. The game will feature adequate functions for concerned parents to lock the game out so that their child cannot access the game and the game will come standard with the lock on, though it will be easy to remove as to allow genuine over 18 Adult gamers ease of access to the game. It is the parental responsibility that no child is given access to this game and I as the developer cannot be held responcible for misuse of this content by a minor as I have already provided the means of self-censorship and its your choice to use it or not. Neuromancer is an adult story and depicts very strong drug usage as well as sexual references.

Moderate Language
Intense Cartoon Violence
Animated Bloodshed
Sexual Themes
Alcohol Use
Tobacco Use
Drug Use

In no way does Neuromancer force or encourage the user to take drugs nor does it give the user control over the action, the drug references in this game are plot devices and not gameplay devices so they don't add anything to the user's experience rather to tell a story about the protagonists path to self destruction. Drug usage and the sexual references in the game will not be an interactive part of this game and I apologize in advance if such content offends you.

yep, I have a considerable sum of mods on my watchlist at the moment - half of which are, regrettably, either dead or dying. Thanks for keeping us updated. :)

Hi CP,

for the cyberspace-part I'd like to point you to the Dystopia-mod. They produced a nice video of their cyberspace-implementation: Moddb.com

Don't wanna encourage you to copy them but maybe it serves you as inspiration.

Why don't you just ask someone to help you? It seems like you're having quite a hard time on your own. The game looks good, a bit static, but that's just the tech demo. I love to see games with a storyline, even though they come from books. Maybe you could get an ad up here in the Wanted section, for say... A mapper, or just anything, because otherwise, this project might fail over this long time.

This is just constructive criticism, so please do not delete this post like the last time ;)

Thanks. I'm planning a pretty massive overhaul of the project too. As I've been told the game at present doesn't meet up with the novel properly so I'm fixing a lot of the inconsistancies. The gameplay will be significantly different as I've discovered a lot of the gameplay doesn't meet the original novel either (I'm refering to the BBS system and the PAX.) The new design document I've written states my intentions to focus all of the hacking on Cyberspace - cyberspace will match the novel more accurately. LAW bots are being removed and replaced with human cops with machine like voices as the novel never states LAW bots even existing.

Cyberspace will resemble Gibson's original description of cyberspace. Ideally I want the cyberspace elements of the game to resemble this scene from Jhonny Mnemonic:

Youtube.com

Only minus the gloves - replace it with a Neuro-interface similar to what Case uses. I also want hacking to be really quick. I'd like to have a 3D modeler to help with the cyberspace scenes so I'll see what is around.
(The idea is that the 2D world represents the dull real world and the 3D cyberspace represents what everyone desires and so it will be an escape from the real 2D world. (it will feel limitless))

I've been palying every version of the game. It does help me understand the feel that the original developers had been going for.

I want to include Ratz into more of the game, it seems that the original Neuromancer game he's cut out of the picture for most of the game which is a pitty because he's a very significant character in the Novel. I'm trying as hard as I can to keep on track with the novel as it was probably the biggest disapointement to a lot of Neuromancer fans out there that the original game didn't correctly follow the novel.

The game will still resemble a lot of the Interplay game - it will be much different though. I haven't really started work on the Alpha due to that I'm getting my Tablet repaired so that I can improve the visual quality and add some depth to the scenes. I'll update things later on.

Sound effects are a HUGE deal with this game and unfortunately I lack the knowledge to do so. I'll see what is availible in that department but not till later in the project. I think I have to do a lot of this project myself before I can recruit anyone.

Thanks for the support ;)

Oh wow. You really got me excited here. And thats hard. I have many fond memories of this game. It's the game that got me into computer games in the first place.

On a development note, what version are you basing this on? I have played the C64, PC and Amiga versions. And while the Amiga has the best resolution, I still go back to the C64. One reason is that there is more motion on the screen than the others. But the main reason is the sound. You probably allready know this, but the sound effects in the C64 version are outstanding. Even by todays standards. I played it again not the long ago, and was still impressed with the sound of every window that opened. And the gut dropping, through-a-corrigated-can sound when you enter the matrix is astounding.

So while the visuals you are developing are beautiful, especialy the backgrounds. I think you would be missing out with some of the awesome sound effects. But then again, I'm sure you are on it. You have done excelent work so far. I wish you luck and keep up the good work.

At present I am considering ways to improve the original design of the game and incorporate more of the novel (and graphic novel) into the game. There are some really cool ideas I've been having to bring the whole feel of the novel into the game. I think that is what was lacking in the original.

I've been told that the worlds I've created in the tech demo are lifeless and flat - I agree with this and tried to fix it for the tech demo but my computer kept crashing during the rendering. (probably cause I'm running Photoshop CS3)

Also FaceGen has let me down and I'm removing the technology from the game. I think it would be just as effective to hand draw the animations as face gen is not all that great for 2D. However I will try my best to keep the photo realistic qualities. I think this will significantly improve the animations rather than use the photo method I used in the tech demo. I am a quite capable artist using drawing, I studied at university and I'm quite tallented when it comes to using a tablet.
eg. Users.on.net
Combine that with my effects skills and I'm pretty sure I can deliver what fans will be happy with.

So yes the game will be a lot different from what I featured in the tech demo. I will still try to keep elements from the original interplay game.

Wish me luck Big Grin! \:D

Also for those who are wondering. The project is based on this game:
