Mod of the Year 2009 Editors Choice - Best Upcoming Mod

Posted by on

2009 was the year that has had the most new profiles created to date, and my mods updating. To be nominated for an award in Best Upcoming mod projects need to have been updated significantly during 2009 and have not released (obviously) anything more then a demo. Here are the Editors of ModDB's top selection of 2009.

Naruto: Naiteki Kensei
offers a new and unique fast-paced gaming experience based on the hit Japanese anime Naruto. Combining aspects of a third-person shooter and an action-based fighter, players will be able to go head-to-head against others online casting clever and powerful jutsus, performing evasive, acrobatic, and free-form movement and melee, and utilizing an array of weapons with multiple functions.

Cry of Fear
You wake up in a dark alley, not knowing anything. What has happened anyway? You struggle after the truth and answers. Answers you want to know in the darkness and fear, which makes your heartbeat race like violent blows against your head. Where do "they" come from? What has happened? Are you just turning insane?

Airborn
is an action adventure mod in a fantastic world on flying islands eons after the world has collapsed from overexploitation.

Zeitgeist
Zeitgeist puts the player into our world, seventy five years ago - except that it's not the world as we know it. The story as it is now, although it might still be changed - time is in a constant flow. History: it is often defined by minor events, resulting in major changes.

Raindrop
September 1997, somewhere in Russia. 58 years have passed since the complex has been cut off from the outside world. You wake up in an abandoned tunnel, without even a name .

So Naruto wins...

you said it yourself. Was NNK released during 2009? yes? no? so why shouldn't it be in the Best Upcoming Mod of 2009?
And I agree with Henley, on an unreleased mod the PR is almost everything.

Its strange because when they released it was during voting for the Players Choice so it seems odd that the Editors would go against that.

against what? the award is about mods on 2009, and chances are that the winner had already been decided even before the mod was out, not everything is done last-minute.

They all deserve their spots on the nomination list. Why are so many people crying about which won? Everyone's obsessed with Rain Drop, but I didn't see much from that video, did you?

Naruto: Naiteki Kensei, was NOT released in 2009, and did NOT have ANYTHING released before 2010.

Cry Of Fearshould have won or at least get a notable mention.

it got. It's a nominee of the editor's choice. I think you're missing the importance of that, winner or no winner.

naruto? But all the others are original and have their own style...

But then maybe you picked because it was the only one that wasn't original :\

Oh I see, whereas a 3rd person fighter is pretty original in the gaming world.

C'mon, show me a 3rd person multiplayer fighter with blazing fast gameplay on an pure-blooded first-person-shooter engine.

No, Earth Special Forces doesn't count, they helped each other out.

That was clearly the implication - NNK is more "original" because it's not a 1st person shooter. (The fact that you seem to base originality on where the camera is in the game is a different matter entirely)

You seriously have to go back to school cuz you can't read at all.
The above poster said that naruto is totaly unoriginal, while i was saying that the other ego-shooters aren't original aswell because there are thousands of thousands games/mods/projects wich are only dealing about shooting with guns. NNK isn't original because it follows the Manga Naruto and it's concept, but the mod is unique because there are barely and 3rd person fighting mods out there.
Now please stop trying to flip my sentences into a nonesense.

Like most I've been surprised by the Editors Choice winners in each category so far. But I think most of us can agree the nominees themselves all deserve to be up there and are for the most part well selected. The Editors behind the choice have their own selection process and that's why it's usually so different from Player's Choice. Congrats to the winners so far.

I'm surprised by this result but think about it guys.

Seriously, that's a pretty kick *** looking game running on the HALF LIFE 1 ENGINE from over 10 years ago. I mean, how did they even do the stuff they did?

Plus, good PR hype makes for good upcoming candidate. PR hype beyond just "lol graphics cocktease".

So it makes sense why the mod won the Editor's Choice to me, seems very deserved :)

Even though I'm definatly not a fan of naurto or this kind of gameplay personally anymore.

Not that I don't agree with the choice for this category, I would just like to know if you guys played this mod before casting your votes?

If you did you have to agree that it looks kind of biased from some peoples view

I heard Henly say on podcast 17 that the editors choice award exist because the community always votes for the popular mods that may or may not have good support or gameplay, while other fantastic mods that are not so popular never get any recognition. Bear in mind that Mod DB team are working adults with a great deal of enthusiasm for all the content on this site and they are not 13 year olds and are not narutards which I must say is a totally irrational conclusion. The Mod DB team has pointed out that there is something good about this mod, many of you who are unsure about the mod or downright hate it should have a great deal of respect for what the Mod DB team does and has does so they do not deserve this backlash they have received. Give the Mod DB the respect it deserves and have a look at NNK and find out why it has been given this award.

I think Naruto is great 'cuz it's the first worth playing Naruto game(although it's a mod)if you have Half-Life!
While Raindrop amazed me!If the quality of the game will be as good as the quality of the graphic it will be a game worth playing!Let's hope it will turn out good! :)

NNK is doing something that other mods on the list didn't: they took an decade old game engine and built a game unto it which graphically fills all the modern standards: depth of field, motion blur (which awesome in it), and they even brought cell-shading into an engine that has almost no shaders at all. They also offer a good, fun and innovative gameplay like wall(and ceiling) running and jutsu system for largest examples.

They deserved it, now if they only got rid of the bugs. ^^
Though if you learn what the bugs are and learn to avoid them, it's all good.

I do hope they get the best released mod award of 2010 awards.
And for those who wonder why NNK got the best unreleased award even though they got released: they released in 2010 not 2009 and this is 2009 awards.

I think if you look at what each game provided to the public it becomes perfectly clear why NNK won:

Naruto: Naiteki Kensei - Visuals, gameplay demonstration, consistent weekly updates for over a year (the great PR mentioned)
Cry of Fear - Visuals, gameplay demonstration
Airborn - Visuals, tech demo
Zeitgeist - Visuals
Raindrop - Visuals

NNK won and they deserved to win...

May I add that all of the games have released part of their soundtrack? Most people think original music and sound effects aren't important, but if you play an entire game without sound, you realize that they are.

What the hell?
Nothing against the guys behind NNK, but this mod is no competition to the other mods.
From the graphics Raindrop clearly deserved to win.
From the world design concept Zeitgeist should have won.
And from the gameplay I think Cry of Fear deserved to win this year.

So NNK is no competition for the other mods because most of them use newer engines with prettier lighting effects? So the prettiest game automatically wins, huh? I wouldn't still be hanging around here if the moddb staff were that biased...

I didn't say it is no competition for the other mods because it has a older engine, but NNK doesn't win in any categorie compared to the other mods.

But I guess such choices are always hard to make because everybody has a different taste.

Reading this thread, thanks to all of you for your support guys, we're glad that so many of you enjoyed our project, even if you didn't enjoy the source material.

It's really sad to see that 90% of the people who are upset about us being fortunate enough to take this award seem to base their hate on nothing more than the fact we are based off of Naruto.

Take the time to read our ModDB profile page, read our updates, see the things we have done and the gameplay we have made. Blending together three different combat styles into one fluid system is one of the reasons we are so successful.

Making mods is no easy task, and all of these mods are fantastic projects that we ourselves cannot wait to try out! But writing off NNK because it is based off an anime before actually looking into the development behind it is as foolish as writing off Airborn for it's disney-esque beauty or Cry of Fear for it's Horror theme.

I don't really get it. Every mod besides naruto looks like so polished and promising. Are the creators of moddb narutards or something? Raindrop and airborn look especially polished, but I'm dying to play Cry of Fear more. Love the scary stuff.
