Mutant Mudds bring me back to a time where video games were brutal - if you didn't up your game, you wouldn't last very long. And Mutant Mudds IS brutal. You will die in more levels than you wont, and when you do, you start over. A level isn't very long on its own, but it can take a really long time to replay what you have already completed if you die.

But it is okay that a game is challenging. Some of the challenge, however, comes from controls that sometimes feel like they are working against you. There are platforms in this game that are up only for enough time for you to jump to the next, and only if you time it perfectly. This is fine on its own, but most of the times you fail one of these jumps, you will fall into spikes, instatly killing you off and putting you back to the beginning of the level. If you do take damage from something that doesn't instantly kill you, you are often put in a very precarious position.

If I could make one change to the game it would be that instant-deaths like spikes or lava didn't actually instant-kill you - but rather took one of your three hearts for the level and put you back on solid ground. Most of my time playing this game was spent playing through parts of the level I had already passed.

That being said, the game has some potential and should appeal to fans of the olden days where video games were designed to make you pull your hair out. The level design is clever and the music and graphics are adequete for the intended genre.

I'm really disappointed by the game:
The controls feels slow&the whole game has a bad timing/pace, it always feels that you are a few seconds too late.
Do you know the moments you have to drive faster on some roads, otherwise the next traffic lights will turn red? Here you have no way to go faster&have to wait all the time.

There are enemies that come out of the background. Some fugly Stoneheads. There are usually at least 2 in a row. And if you don't jump exactly in the moment it jumps in the background into the newly formed hole, then you have to wait between the two heads, because they would crush you otherwise. The same with platforms that disappear.  Either wait or jump trough it. And so on, and so forth.

The graphics are functional but boring, because not a lot of variety is offered. The level design is, however, the greatest weakness.
They are often placed in the levels, where enemies are placed, but they have nearly no chance to hit the player, the players themselves can easily eliminate the enemies. So you wait until the bad guy comes into the picture&shoot, then wait again, etc.  Another time the enemies (eyes throwers) are placed at the far end of the screen so that you'll discover them far too late. Sometimes even complete parts are recycled in different levels.

The different layers are a nice idea, but a lot of lost potential here aswell. Here you jump in the background, sometimes in the foreground and that's it... doesn't feel special.

If you want to get all collectables, you sometimes have to jump down in a different layer and go back again exactly the same way to get back there, where you had to jump down.
The special levels are also nothing special. Nearly mono colored &nothing special at all.

It is overall a ok game for people who want to look at a formally 3DS 2D platformer with retro styled gfx, but the price is simply too high.
And there are way better games available for the PC in the same genre, lots of them for free. N

You might be wondering why so many people gave this game a 10 / 10. I was surprised to find out that while this might just be a simple platformer, it's a GOOD simple platformer.

It doesn't do anything surprising in that you run around, jumping on platforms, and shooting Mudds (enemies) with a water gun - standard platformer fare. The background and foreground jumping mechanics work well, but don't switch up the gameplay. However, everything feels tight. The gameplay is solid, surprisingly so - never do you die because of the game. It's >always< your fault, which makes it fun to retry the same level. You always think, "Man, I know what I need to do to get past this." Also, the game actually gets significantly harder over the course of the levels, surprisingly - the platforming does get more precise, and the enemies are placed in more challenging positions in the levels.

As for the music, it's also great. I like World 3's music in particular. The graphics are nicely drawn and animated pixel art, as well. While the music and graphics aren't exceptional, they lend well to the overall theme and feel of the game.

As for improvements, it would have been nice to have more exploratory elements and set pieces, like Kirby's Adventure for the NES. In Mutant Mudds, you start a level on the same screen that the end goal is on, so there's not much of an exploratory feel (though there are still secrets to find), and the level just consists of platforms, hazards, and enemies. More puzzle elements would be nice, as well.

Overall, I give this game a 8 / 10!

Can't wait to finally enjoy it on PC.

On 3DS, this game was, believe it or not, better than New Super Mario Bros 2.

If you're a wuss platform gamer, stay away. If you're after pixel-perfect challenges, then step right in!

Fantastic.
