Mount&Blade is a 3D, open-ended, single-player, third- or first-person, computer role-playing game in beta stage of development, created and distributed by the Turkish development house TaleWorlds. Mount&Blade has a medieval setting, without any fantasy elements. Mount&Blade is notable for its emphasis on realistic cavalry combat, which was common in the era, but is largely absent in most RPG titles.

The player can directly control only one player character, which is created when a new game starts. A character class only serves as a template for future character development. Each "class" differs only in its starting attributes, skill points and equipment. There are no in-game restrictions on equipment or skill use based on class and gender. The maximum level of a skill and the use of certain equipment is linked to a related attribute. The player character's facial features are customizable. The face and hair can be changed at any time, should the player wish to do so. The player character may take sides with any one or none of the factions present in Calradia: The Swadian, Rhodok, Vaegir, Khergit, and Nord armies, or hunt down the various bandits and rogues that plague the region.

The gameplay is open, similar to games such as Elite or Darklands. The game currently has a skeleton plot and the player is free to do as he wishes. While combat is the main draw of the game, it is for the most part optional.

Characters can make money and gain experience by trading goods between towns. The game features a basic dynamic economy based on supply and demand.

The player's party can be formed by recruiting unique non-player characters (NPC), known as a hero or companion, or more generic soldiers. The player can increase his maximum party size by either investing in certain skills, or earning renown by winning battles.

The player can develop the skills of his character and companions over the course of the game. Certain skills affect the party as a whole, so companions can be used to complement the skills of the player character. Skills can be improved by gaining levels or reading and holding books.

The player can also own a fief, a faction-related village given to the player by the faction leader. Mercenaries can also be obtained at a tavern, and prisoners can be rescued from enemy parties. Prisoners that the player character captures during battle can also be forced to join the player's party, though they will often desert the player. As these generic soldiers fight, they will gain experience and can be upgraded into stronger, more specialized soldiers. Soldiers will often have multiple upgrade paths.

The player can siege enemy castles, towns, and villages. If the player wins the siege, his faction takes control of the territory. Occasionally, the faction leader will reward a captured territory to the player. The player also has the option of declaring seccesion from his liege and owning an independent state. This option comes after being refused control of a fief that the player captured.

No multi-player option exists, nor is one planned.

Every kingdom also has a rival claimant to the throne. Should the player choose to back this claimant, then a civil war occurs between the rebels of that faction and the loyalists of that faction. The tournament system has been revised, the graphics overhauled, and the game rebalanced.

After only a week or so after the release of 0.950, a new beta version of Mount and Blade has been released! 0.951 provides many bugfixes to 0.950. Here's what the developers have to say

I hope you will see for yourself that this is the most sophisticated and improved Mount&Blade version so far, and this fact owes itself to the extra-ordinary efforts of our team and community. First and foremost, I want to thank Steve (aka nijis) who designed and wrote some of the most exciting new features of this version, breathing fresh life to Mount&Blade's gameplay and atmosphere. Also a newer addition to the team but no less welcome, was Ryan (aka Winter), who did a wonderful job rewriting and polishing dialogs, menu and quest texts, making it all so much more inspiring and fun to read. Our programmer, Cem has worked relentlessly, adding new features, fixing and improving the AI and everything else. Our art team, including Ozgur, ipek, Mustafa and our new animator, Pinar (Special congratulations are in order here, because she's getting married tomorrow!!!) have created wonderful looking new models, animations and enviroments. Our concept artist Ganbat has sent us some stunning new drawings and our voice actor Tassilo has sent some excellent new voice samples. We'll also have some very exciting surprises for you soon, from yet another new addition to Mount&Blade team, but let that be my secret for the time being.

So sharpen your sword and ready your horse for Calradia is going to war! Find and download the latest version in the download section soon or use these mirrors:

Thought it could use a better description:
M&B;is an RPG set in a fictous (but based on reality) medieval world (OMG!). At the moment it's at version 8.94, the dev team released the game as a beta a long time ago (a year and a half I think) and it's been going in leaps and bounds ever since, flourishing on a strong community and a solid dev team, who are frequently releasing new updates to the game (for free of course) as they move towards a commercial release at v1.0 (probably on steam for much more than there charging now =P). It's by no means a traditional RPG your character is neither a) a one man army or b) the centre of the game world and the game play is completely different to any traditional rpg. Picture something along the lines of medieval total war as an rpg and you'll be getting the drift.
Long story short, it's a great game with excellent sandbox game play (in the current version there is no "main quest"), one of the best melee combat systems ever, good graphics (ignore the screen shots up here, there from a much older version before it was overhauled with bumpmapping was introduced), massive battles (in the default game around one hundred and something NPC's all up, with the battlesizer mod up to a couple of hundred each side, and with a descent computer it'll actually run), great gameplay (I've lost hours at a time to this game, from trying to take over the world one siege at a time to just gogling at the ragdoll when you lance a horse, it's one of the funnest games I've ever played).
On top of all that it has one of the broadest, dedicated and prolific modding communities I've ever seen. Some of the best mod's I've ever played have been for this game, the ones on moddb aren't anything special, just tweaks. Honsetly I've seen more quality total conversions for this game than any other, everything from feudal japan, cro-magnam man, sci-fi and the lord of the rings TC's have been made (usually as good if not better than the origonal).

A great realtime 3rd person medieval combat game... with horses!

But the developers charge a ridiculous high price, for a game that has'nt become a final product yet.

Not only that there is much more which I wont comment on so check it out.
