FIRE BREATHING CHICKENS! Got your attention? Mendel’s Farm is a quirky life/farm sim game that tasks you with assisting the crazy scientist Mendel in running and managing a farm of mutated livestock and crops. There are many tactics that the player can use to do this, with a goal of ours being that each player is able to have a unique story when playing the game. With many tactics, and millions of variations of mutated animals to pick from, the player can personalize their farm to suit their requirements. Annoyed by that fox that keeps stealing your chickens? Well, it wouldn't steal a chicken that could breath fire now, would it? This is just the tip of the iceberg in the crazy little game that is Mendel's Farm.

A breakdown of how we upgraded the landscape in Mendel's Farm and the variations of grass textures we went through to get to where we are.

Hello everyone!

In a previous news update we mentioned we would go over how we upgrade and develop aspects of Mendel's Farm. This time we will be showing the process we went through when improving the landscape and what we will be covering next.

Our old landscape was far to bright and blocky in colouration and we decided it was time for some improvements.

So, first up we started playing with the values and tweaking what we already had, but ultimately we ended up with an even brighter texture than before, which was pretty much the opposite of our goal.

After deciding we needed to start again, and clear our minds from what we had already, Our graphic artist Owen jumped in and made some extreme changes.

The result was indeed extreme, but a bit too much. We decided to try again, and make some more textures from scratch.

This was the result, a much grassier style texture. Overall, it was decided it was still too noisy and another attempt was required.

This time we tried to keep things colourful, but not too noisy. The result was something in the right direction but still not quite there. We decided to try combine some of the old textures we liked with some new ones, and lower the opacity so things were not over the top.

This was a much better result, and something we all agreed on was something worth keeping.
The next thing to work on is some darkness around the base of trees to emulate shadows, but overall we are happy with this improvement!

If you have any ideas on how we could improve, feel free to let us know, we always want to improve Mendel's Farm!

Next up we will be covering the development of the tree line and how we created and designed the textures and models, Say goodbye to the lollipop style trees!
