Megabyte Punch DEMO
Apr 25, 2012 Demo 3 commentsThis is the demo version (standalone) of Megabyte Punch.
Megabyte Punch is an electro beat 'em up/platforming/fighting game in which you build your own fighter. Every creature in the game is made of separate parts. Parts have their own powers and bonuses (like gun arms for a shoot ability) and you can attach them to yourself freely. You travel through different environments, search for hidden parts and battle other creatures for theirs. This is the adventure mode. Then there is the fight mode. Here you can fight other players in a destructible arena with the abilities your customized creature gives you.
The game takes place in an computer world filled with creatures called Megac. As a young Megac, you fight to enter the Grand Tournament, the biggest fighting competition there is, to compete for the title of strongest of the world!

We uploaded the latest version of Megabyte Punch. The version number is 11.5 and you probably won't see a lot of differences with the previous update since most of it is under the hood. We fixed a silly color bug that was only noticeable when you installed the game for the first time with Update 11. We also added some AI fight mode behavior they are a bit less suicidal now. The HUD is a bit more subtle and dynamically scales to your screen resolution. We also added 5 new parts that are currently only available in the part store. You can find the full list of changes below.
We didn't work on Megabyte Punch full time last weeks. We also worked on our little competitive baseball fighting game Lethal League which you can play here:Lethalleague.reptile-games.com
So what's up next? Well, we are going to finish up Megabyte Punch! After 1.5 years of development we are finally reaching the final stage of the game, we will announce an official launch date soon! We are trying to set up some sort of a close Beta (for testing purposes) for who have pre-ordered the game. More details on this will follow later though. We will now lock up our self in the office to start the official crunch, there is a lot left to do!
General fixes and changes:
+ Dynamic HUD size
+ 5 new parts
+ Ai behavior
+ more bombs in Ancient tech to prevent getting stuck
+ some sort of display platform in your house (The camera zooms in to check your parts)
* fixed a color bug
* fixed minor issues- Deleted the version update notifier in the menu (Playtomic quit their services)
~ Minor changes in a few fighting stages
Combat and movement tweaks:
~ Uppercut and Pound ability a bit less overpowered
~ Megabyte Punch punches through a shield now
~ Slicedash a bit more powerful
~ Increased the hitbox of the ground up attack
~ Slightly increased the virus slice ability hitbox
This is the demo version (standalone) of Megabyte Punch.

Really a great game that is under the radar. I mean this mixes mega man, and super smash bros into one game, two games so many people love. Yet somehow this game isn't getting nearly the love it should be. I sincerely suggest people check this game out.

Don't think I've ever actually posted a comment here yet, which is shameful.
Been playing this since a number of versions ago. Things keep changing with the updates, mostly for the good I think; you guys have really been doing a good job of focusing the theme. Great job on the visuals, and the soundtrack is fantastic. This is a great arcade beat-em-up game that anyone remotely interested should check out.

I realize it's a bit late in development to be giving suggestions, but here are some thoughts I have anyway.
Combat works great, and I like the newer, smash-bros style dynamic ability selection, but it might be nice to be able to switch back to the old one for some people.
Stages are way too long, given that you can't quit and then resume from partway through. I like to search every nook and cranny of every level and it can end up taking easily 40 minutes or more to get through one of them.
I love the variety of weapons, but some of them seem almost uselessly weak. It would also be nice to have more parts with the same ability that look different.
The big thing for me is that I wish there were more than one or two possible body locations for a certain ability. Often I find myself wanting to use a certain ability, but can't because level restrictions require me to use a different head part, for example. Or because there's no possible combination of all of the abilities I want (maybe they're all only available in leg parts, for example).
Thanks for your kind words and your suggestions!
It's never too late to share your thoughts about the game.
- We don't think the old ability system is doing justice to the fighting anymore.
- We are still searching for the right balance in the levels between exploration/platforming and fighting. None of the current levels can be considered final yet. (At the moment I can see Dion redesigning some of the levels) :)
- I think there are already quite some parts with the same ability that look different. More variety is always welcome though!
- I see what you mean... That's a tricky one, it would be silly to have to your head part equipped to your leg for example. On the other hand we don't want a restricted feel to the customization.
I love that you guys reply so quickly. =]
Anyway, as a really obvious example of what I was talking about, the 'Bomba Head' is the only part that lets you place those timed explosives (at least it was last time I checked). The ice stage requires you to wear a certain head part though, to protect you from the gases.
Also, since the drill core was removed, I have to use up both of my leg slots for ability parts now, which sort of restricts the look of my Megac as well. It's mostly an aesthetic thing (since non-ability parts don't have a huge impact) but still.
However, I get what you mean by it being a 'tricky' issue. I mean, if you made a part for every possible location that gave you an extra jump, you could stack them all and get like seven or eight extra jumps.

As a side suggestion, have you guys considered a system that allows players to upgrade or modify their parts to give them the specific abilities/boosts of their choosing? That would allow you to make your Megac look any way you like and still have the skills you wanted. Obviously, parts like wings and guns would be restricted to certain ability sets, but most of them could be pretty flexible. I've heard WoW does something like that, where max level players can switch their high level gear stats to some low level gear if they like the appearance more.
- There is also a hip to place mines with. And there are other head parts and a shoulder part to protect you from virus clouds. Nonetheless this is indeed some thing that is restricting the aesthetic choices you can make in the game.
- There is actually a new core with the drill ability, you can also use the drill arm.
- That is exactly one of the problems when you can attach every part to any slot.
In Wow there are actually two options, you can reforge your equipment so you can change the actual stats on the item. Or you can transmogrify your equipment. In this case you change the visual appearance of the item. We have considered something like -choosing what abilities you want on an item. However, we try to design the aesthetics of the parts according to the ability linked to them. On top of that, this is something too big to change in this phase of development :(.
You don't need to equip any poison resist to ENTER the ice level, just to get to it. So have whatever head part you want (shoulder part is far from accessible at this point) in your inventory, get to the door, switch and enter. WoW has equipment, races, skills, etc. They have levels and classes that indicate abilities. Megabyte Punch does not. Being able to visually analyse what abilities a megac has on sight saves time for both players (what parts do I have equipped again?), and so that you can't hide your megabyte punch behind a basic arm. Hips are hard to see, but they are a single part, and can, so to speak, be an 'ace in the hole'. Do you want to kill that joke? I am in favor of more parts though. I mean, there aren't any tank treads, or hover legs... Just sayin'...
Anyway to set each of the 4 commands to separate buttons rather that pressing a direction and button?
This way it would be much easier to use a skill in a direction such as drilling up when it's equipped to the sideways command. Or is this intentional?
We had something like this in an early version. It was okay for the adventure mode but horrible for the fightmode, is was a slow system. This is why we decided to go with the current way of using your abilities.
haha, what part?:)
.... it's the ghost soldier head. Ironic. I got it right after making such a little hassle about it :P
I don't know it's since I still don't have it yet, but it's the only head from the binary fortress I don't have. The other heads are cybershot headgun, madpot head, pomus head, imperial battle head, zomzom head, and velox head. So yeah, all but that one I can't even name.
