Over the course of the last six months our Viking hero Rorik has changed in look and feel dramatically. He started as more of a short and chubby dwarf like Viking. Since our first concept images he has increased in height and gained a leaner yet still large and powerful build.

This week I’ll be displaying some concept images displaying how Rorik has changed over time. Keep in mind that he is still not 100% finalized and can change at anytime. We are still looking for an iconic look and will continue to make changes till we achieve that goal.

Concept images for Frank

Above is our original rendition of Rorik. Notice the ponytail and beer gut.

Variety of Rorik animation snapshots

Here we were still undecided on facial features, how his beard shaped and overall height/stance. I also kept the animation concepts in the image because I thought you would all appreciate seeing them :)

Most recent Rorik concept ( 3-5-13)

Rorik Colored Concept

This is our most recent concept image of Rorik. The ponytail is no more ( Vikings historically would shave the back of their head), he is now taller and has more of a Mr. Incredible look. This image is of course only a general outline but it is easy to see how Rorik has evolved over time.

We still have some areas we want to refine but are now confident in our current art direction.

Let us know what you think about his current look!

What do you like / dislike ?

How could we make him better?

So it took you guys 6 months to shape the main character... Can`t wait for the game in 30-50 years :)

Since when did Vikings have 300- the movie armor ? :)

Watch the historical series "Vikings" - It`s currently at episode 2.
That should clarify what a viking is.

Right now he looks like a Dwarf :)

Hi KamiKaze.101,

We have been working on Loaded for roughly 6 months now alongside another project titled EverDead as well as contract work to keep the lights on. EverDead will be nearing release the end of this month so we are excited be able to dedicate more time to Loaded. Concept art has been made in a variety of areas so we plan on releasing more info weekly just to start building a small community around the game.

The armor your mentioning is only a mock up for right now. Loaded will feature a huge amount of loot that ranges from the historically accurate to over the top. We are aware that Vikings never had horned helmet, etc but based off the feedback we have received from fans they prefer us to not go 100% accurate and have some fun with the culture.

Feel free to check out the colored representation of that concept as well: Indiedb.com

It is funny that you mention that series on History Channel. I have been watching it and I look forward to seeing where they go with the series. I believe Vikings & Norse Mythology have been greatly underused in games/tv/movies.

I hope you stick around and check out future updates so you can continue giving us feedback :)

come on guys, don't be so harsh!
its so easy to bash things here, these guys try to make a game so only for that i already give them credits!
don't mind these silly comments of others please, don't let them spoil
you day! (i mean that!).

it's clear that the viking is more of a comic figure as a real historical figure. Then it isn't a problem that he doesn't look really like a Viking.
i think he looks great and i could see a comical viking in it.

And i don't believe that that is all they did in 6 months, they probably have done more behind the scenes. and even when they didn't.
just work in your own tempo guys, do what you like and hopefully the public likes it to.

much success,
Leon

Thank you for the kind words Leon!

As I mentioned above we have in fact been working on a lot of things the past 6 months ( Loaded related and otherwise).

Being realistic may work for some games but we are looking for fun gameplay so being 100% historically accurate is not what we are going for. Given our loot system we are going to offer a wide variety of equipment and going historically accurate would limit us greatly in that regard.

Once we reveal more information about the story and multiple universes the art syle should make more sense.

At this point we are mainly releasing these weekly updates to slowly push out information and get feedback while building a small community.

Thanks again for taking the time to check out the dev diary!
