Lenna's Inception - Pre-alpha7 Demo
May 9, 2013 Demo 0 commentsDemo release of Lenna's Inception version 2^-26 (pre-alpha7) built on 9th May 2013. You will need to know what to do with a JAR file to run this. Changes...
With the Prince kidnapped and the Chosen One defeated... terrible monsters have begun to plague the land. Play as Lenna, out-of-town adventurer, as she plunders monster-filled dungeons for divine artefacts to fix a world on the brink. And with novel procedural generation techniques, every play-through will give a fresh experience.
Lenna's Inception is a top-down puzzle-action-adventure game, similar to some of the Gameboy Zelda titles, but with procedurally-generated maps and puzzles, and a post-game sandbox. This might interest fans of other action-RPG games who want an experience that continues providing new locations and play-styles after completion, as well as anyone who enjoys playing retro-style indie games and RPGs.
The game will include only a series of dungeons while I work out the core gameplay mechanics. Further RPG elements, including an overworld and a story, will be added after the game goes into alpha.

This week I've been adding randomly-generated block-pushing (sokoban) puzzles to Lenna's Inception, based on a 2011 paper by Taylor & Parberry.
As far as I can tell, no other game developer has incorporated this kind of procedural puzzle into a game before, so I’ve open-sourced the library I wrote for this, Zosoko, to save other developers the time. The code is still a bit hairy in places, but it works well enough for Lenna's Inception at least.
Anyway you're probably more interested in the game than the code, so here's a short gameplay video showing off the new block puzzles. The rooms containing the puzzles are still a bit bare, but with the refactoring coming up soon, room decoration will get much better!

@mtrc Haha, slowly! 4 dungeons down, 4 more to go, and then I can get back to procedural generation. Working on any new projects lately?

@MaxSpectra That graphical glitch changing Lenna's sprite color was because I made clothing an item, which your save file didn't have. Oops!

This game looks great! i'd certainly like to do a let's play on this. :)
And I'd certainly be interested in watching a let's play (for analysis purposes). Let me know if you make one, and I'll give you a free copy of the game at release. :)
Hello! i've been a little busy, but I finally got around to making a let's play of your game! i really like that it has elements of a legend of zelda game. here's the link (Hopefully it's ok to post it here.: Youtube.com
I'll make a let's play, but speaking spanish coz I'm spanish :P
That's fine as long as you can translate any critique you have for me. The offer I made above applies for anyone for now. :)
Ok, don't worry, I'll give you my opinion. I've played for 20 minutes (I think I'm at lvl 3)and I'm playing right now at this moment, In my opinion you are doing a great job! The game is so cool. It's need some improvements like more music, for example, a different one for the game-over screen, but is ok. I have not found any bug, the game engine seems to work very fine! It would be great if you would implement a world like in Zelda games for future versions of the game. It would be fine too if you hold sword button, when you would relase it, it would make the mitic spin like in Zelda games hehe. I hope you've understood everything. Salutes! pd: If I find any bug, I'll tell you.
Thanks! It's reassuring that there weren't any surprizes in your comments. I do want to add an overworld between dungeons but it's quite a way off yet (if I do add it). I'll be posting about my plans for the game sometime soon.
Cool!
I really liked the Game Boy visual style!
This game looks amazing, I'm tracking this for sure!
